Re: VP-330 Vocal Section

The Yamaha A5000 sampler can get close, even when using a sawtooth, but it can only do 6 steep bandpasses.

The Clavia Nord Modular series can do some of those tricks.

Re: Making Big 80s Stereo Pads with Mono Output Synths

I'm trying to achieve that big 80s pad sound (stereo).
Get a Roland SDD-320 Dimension D. That’s a very common way they did it back then.

Re: Which Roland S sampler??

There’s a lot of programming potential in the Roland S-7xx samplers, but it comes with a very high price — an absolutely Byzantine structure and operating system. Granted, that multi-angle approach allows for many timbres from a single set of samples, with swank MIDI control and such, but if you jus...

Re: The Joys of Hardware Sequencers (Story/Rant/Endorsement)

I found my hardware sequencer: a Mac! (OK, j/k - I know it’s off-topic)

Modular synthesis, modular effects processing, modular sequencing — life is good. ;)

Re: New Song (fans of Depeche, NIN type stuff I guess?)

Thanks for that. I liked Destruction-Delusion a lot. I have one critique and one suggestion: first, allow some dynamics into the recording - the tone of the song would be supported by this, and I think the timbres were somewhat hampered by the lack of dynamics. Less compression and/or levelling, ple...

Re: New Song (fans of Depeche, NIN type stuff I guess?)

Any chance of a post edit where you use the SoundCloud tags? I’ve got a browser issue that many seem to have where I can’t play a SC post on their website directly.

thanks,

Re: What kind of Loopers?

The Looperlative can do a ~12.5 minute stereo loop, and has 2 stereo sends and returns. With its 128MB memory, it will do up to 8 stereo loops at ~90 seconds each. I don’t fully know the capabilities of the unit, but an Elektron Octatrack might be an option to look at. A laptop with audio I/O seems ...

Re: any digital synth with a random button?

I find the process of randomization of patch params to be more productive when the params are masked for depth of randomization. In any case, it can be a nice way to go when you don’t want to be wholly deterministic about the creative process. Such a choice isn’t always about a lack of skill. cheers...

Re: sound character

If the universe is fair, then I hope that Aeon avatar is truthful and we have the rare bird of a beauty that is into synths. It’s truly Lena Katina, and she sings over synths, but don’t think for a moment that is me. As to the universe being fair, my sense is “the isness” transcends all such dualis...

Re: sound character

I appreciate your experienced viewpoint, but I'm always baffled by why the sharing of that viewpoint always has to turn into a chiding . When one speaks for others’ experience, such that one states what the others’ experience is, some people will experience an emotional reaction that can range from...

Re: sound character

If you're a person who loves effects and studio processing, it really doesn't matter which synth you have, as long as its functionality suits your needs. When you process a synth with effects, etc. you're creating its tone. You're inventing its "sound." It's a total waste of money to buy a "tone" s...

Re: Nord Lead 3 - Digital Aliasing Issues

Well, I'd hardly call a set of laptop speakers a worthwhile audio monitor system - at least as it concerns diagnosing a synth.

Re: Nord Lead 3 - Digital Aliasing Issues

I played your recording here on both a Dell laptop’s internal speakers and the internal speakers of my iMac, and no rumbling was to be heard. Are you exciting a resonant frequency with the Nord that causes your laptop to sympathetically vibrate and distort? Not related exactly to your issue, but I t...

Re: Nord Lead 3 - Digital Aliasing Issues

Many digital instruments implement the volume knob as a digital scaling before the D/A conversion, so using those with the volume knob down will decrease the signal-to-noise ratio, and increase quantization error in low level signals. Properly implemented dither solves that problem surprisingly wel...

Re: Nord Lead 3 - Digital Aliasing Issues

I also hope the OP has the volume knob on the NL3 set to full-scale. Needless to say, if not, more of the signal will fall below the threshold of noise, and we can't really know what the instrument is capable of. Are you talking about the main volume knob on the upper left part of the unit? No, I d...
