Re: Roland JX8P w/M16C plus case for a Korg Arp Odyssey

Whether I would or not makes no difference because I am not you and probably don't have the same needs. Comparing a polysynth with patch memory and MIDI to a monosynth with no memory and weak MIDI support (no velocity, AT, CCs, etc.) is apples and oranges. Think about how much you are using the JX8P...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

Using USB for power saves the mfr the trouble of providing a power adapter, that's all. They give you a USB cable and expect you to own a phone charger. I'm seeing this on all kinds of devices these days, not just audio gear.

Re: help on choosing the right synth

Prophet if you must have real analog. It sounds similar to the Mopho.

Virus if you can live with digital and need the higher voice count and multitimbral features.

Re: Korg M1 patches

There is a way to do it without a librarian but it's very tedious, requiring multiple sysex transfers. With a librarian it's usually just drag and drop and then upload to the instrument. This will work on any instrument that supports dumping single patches as well as banks of patches and allows choo...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

I wouldn't recommend the RM1x myself, I was just pointing it out as an older box that was built to sequence entire songs. It's an old unit so is more likely to have maintenance issues, it uses floppy disks for storage! No USB or flash card slots, either.

Re: Good MIDI Keyboard for Hardware?

Lower end keyboards tend to lack aftertouch and real MIDI ports. "Easy" is relative... no controllers are very easy to set up, plenty are easy to operate once properly set up. The biggest issue with most controllers is whether it's possible to store enpough mappings to get knobby control of everythi...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

I look at a screen all day too and don’t want to do that when I actually find time for music. I have the rm1x or a korg emx-1 I use to synch and sequence a few cheapo synths and drum machines. Both the machines you mention are older boxes with more sophisticated sequencers than modern, less expensi...

Re: Maschine - should I switch?

Yamaha confused the heck out of their customers when they came out with Montage/MODDX. They are not workstations and do not have a fully featured sequencer. The old Motif series were workstations and had full sequencers. Yamaha maintained the 128 song capability but the Montage "scratchpad sequencer...

Re: MIDI on Effects Processors

25 years ago when still using tape and most instruments had no onboard effects, I owned a couple of hardware effects processors and I did use MIDI to select effects patches for different songs. That way I could recall all the sounds I needed by sending program changes at the top of the sequence. As ...

Re: Noob MIDI controller questions...

Take something like the NI Maschine MK3, or Arturia's SparkLE. I keep reading (and watching) that these devices can be used independently of any software. No, they are bundled with the software they are designed to control. They are not meant to be used as general purpose controllers. SparkLE is es...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

Grooveboxes give full control over the musical aspect, entering melodies, chords, drumbeats, etc. The amount of control you have over the synth/sample engine inside varies from unit to unit. When you say "compose" if you mean can you sequence entire songs on the box , it again depends on the box and...

Arturia Discontinues MiniBrute

Looks like the MiniBrute is gone, with the MiniBrute 2 and MicroBrute remaining. It's no longer listed on the Arturia website as a product.

Re: Arturia Microfreak

Although all the individual building blocks are available elsewhere, I think the integration is the real draw of this machine. For ambient type stuff, combining poly AT with looping EGs, motion sequencing and 35 mod slots...well, just wow. =D> This is the first synth since the DSI Evolver ove...
