Ok, sounds like we have a good list of the well-engineered music. Can anyone come up with a good list of the worst-engineered LP's? I vote for: Most anything early Jefferson Airplane. Ugh... Absolutely horrible. Too many from the past 5 years or so. All this loudness bullshit is taking a toll on my...

Favorite use of ducking:

Gate opened by snare hit to let white noise through and/or Gate opened by kick drum to let 808/low-freq. sine wave through.

That's a lot of s**t to cover in just one class. I didn't mean one class as in one session...just not a degree...the one class can take months as far as I'm concerned. I've tried books...but sometimes I just learn better in a classroom environment that is hands on...so someone can show me what I'm ...

Re: booking studio time?

been tossing around the idea with my bandmates for a while now in hopes of gaining some perspective on the whole recording process, learning a few things and (hopefully) applying it to future home recordings. so i have a few questions... how many of you go to pro (or semi-pro) studios to record you...

Røde makes great mics and they are based in Australia. I recommend the NT2-A. It has won several awards, so I am not the only one that thinks there is something to it. They go for about $399.97 (US) here in the states. I would think you would be able to get them cheaper there. I'll second the Rode ...

That's a lot of s**t to cover in just one class. Honestly man, books are where it's at. If you haven't already, look into the Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinsky and Understanding Audio by Daniel M. Thompson. Owsinski has another book called the Recording Engineers Handbook which is more ab...

Production value and engineering value are, in my mind, two separate things. Thriller has production value out the wazoo, doesn't mean it was MIXED very well (although it was). What really defines a well mixed album for me is the engineers ability to put everything in it's place while preserving the...

The Sonitus suite that comes with SONAR has 6. C10, part of most Wave's bundles has...well, 10 bands (you know...just in case you need 10 bands). Frankly, I'm going to have to parrot everyone else and say if you REALLY need more than 4 bands, it probably means you have no fnuckin' idea what you're ...

I've known many people to EQ and Compress their entire mix FIRST. Sounds kinda crazy, but if you give it some thought it makes a bit of sense. For people who really know what sound they're going for, it's very easy to EQ and compress the whole mess and then sort of "mix into" the end result. It's no...

Best Albums from an Engineering Standpoint

What are the best mixed albums in your opinion?

Two I can think of off the top of my head:

The Clash - London Calling
Brian Wilson - SMiLE

There's a few others I'm forgetting, I just know there are.

What say you VSE?

Thanks for your help guys! I never thought of adding more than one parametric and setting up the bands. :D ....but just out of curiosity, are there any parametrics with at least a few more than 5 bands? soooorry. you're all really helpful and I really appreciate your replies 8) The Sonitus s...

I've only had limited experience with them and what I've heard sounded really false, digital, and cluttered. I heard one applied to a drum mix and suddenly all the drums turned into this wall of sound (an effect I'm really not a fan of). If I ever heard a really practical use of one, I'm sure I'd si...

Loud music is the bane of my existence. I don't understand this new trend of making everything MASSIVE and loud as f**k. There's no reason for it. If the music is too quiet in your stereo, turn it up. There is still something called headroom which really needs to be preserved in order to create a ba...
