Catching up with Optimus Prime

Hi all, I haven't been on VSE on quite a while, here's what I've been doing: https://palmsvoice.bandcamp.com - recently launched synth-pop project, Optimus Prime with vocals pretty much, musically entirely based on ideas from a particularly explosive creative period in 2007. - get the album for "nam...

Alternative info panel for Poly-800 mkI

Hey everyone, I haven't logged in in ages. Here's something I made - a Poly-800 mkII styled info panel for the Poly-800 mkI, with the addition of some helpful elements of the manual (regarding the slightly complicated envelopes). https://i.imgur.com/NA0X0O4.png Here's a somewhat color coded version:...

Re: A couple of tracks

I get the appeal of the second one, but I really like the first, what delay did you use there? It makes a big sound.

'04-'06 MEGAMIX (a mix of old material)

here is a collection of tracks written from 2004 to 2006 (most are from 2006, seemed like a bad year at the time, turns out i was pretty productive). i am usually focused on making albums, and couldn't fit these anywhere, nor could i finish them as standalone tracks, none of them seemed substantial ...

Synth ID from photo/video

Stumbled across this video of cool Canadian band Absolutely Free: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08uiEXWHcVs The keyboard player facing away from the camera is playing a synth I can't recognise: http://i61.tinypic.com/28jjl3l.jpg http://i62.tinypic.com/mbqp8g.jpg http://i59.tinypic.com/viies8.jpg C...

Re: Let's talk about... monitor placement

A poor man's solution for acoustic treatment is lots of books on shelves. Try moving the whole setup away from the wall, and lining the wall with bookshelves, if you have some lying around. I'm suggesting this because that's how my room is "treated" - far from ideal, but way better than bare walls. ...

Re: Acer W3 Win8 tablet - anyone use one?

Well, most regular Windows apps (or programs?) should run on it, since it runs actual Windows 8, not RT.

I'd try a lightweight VST host and a few free VSTs for starters, just to see how it goes.

Re: Reason, Renoise, Fruity Loops or other?

A vertical piano roll will be great. Renoise lacks a piano roll reditor. Maybe Renoise's tracker sequencing interface is what he's after? Concerning Reason as an option, its MIDI capabilities are rather limited, basic even. There are demos available of all products you mentioned, maybe you could tr...

It's called New Jack Swing, the sound you went for here.

Re: What about using different effects simultaneously?

Does that really work for any two signals? I guess I should just try and hear for myself, but if I understand correctly, M-S was originally a microphone technique which utilizes a bi-directional (figure-of-eight) response characteristic microphone for the S signal, placed at 90 degrees with a cardio...

Re: Help with figuring out a sound (Chromatics "Cherry")

By filter key follow, do you mean Keytracking Filter? Yep. How would you configure the band pass filter parameters? Cutoff and resonance at halfway positions, trial and error from there. Check out this other track by Chromatics, it features a similar sound, but a bit more intelligible: http://www.y...

Re: Help with figuring out a sound (Chromatics "Cherry")

Your starting point is appropriate. I'd make sure that the filter key follow is enabled, and the sound source appears to be monophonic. Also, I'd probably go with a band pass filter, rather than high pass. Not sure if there's any delay there, but there's definitely a ton of reverb. You need a short ...
