Re: just bought yamaha sk20 - hate it! help

The 20 is probably not as rare as the 30 (adds a pressure-sensitive monosynth to the 20's features, as well as a lot of weight (around 22kg/48lb). The real rarity (which I'd love to get my hands on if I didn't live up a flight of stairs ;) ) is the dual-manual SK50D, comes in its own case with legs ...

Re: elka synthex vs andromeda

While I've never played a Synthex (unfortunately), I suspect there's very little it can do that the Andromeda can, though the Synthex's sequencer is probably better. I don't think the Synthex has velocity or aftertouch, for one thing (not many synths did back then).

Re: Novachord #346 Inspection & Initial Wakeup

Some parts of that look in amazing condition for its age (others sadly don't!), but my first thought when I realised where it had come from & gone to was "the shipping must've cost a fortune!" ;)

Re: I think my jupiter 6 is picking up radio stations?

Someone once told me that he had the impression he was receiving Radio Moscow on his Behringer mixer, since then he advices everyone to avoid this brand.. ^^ Hardly a Behringer issue, Radio Moscow seems to appear on pretty much any & every type of audio-related equipment at some time or other, & it...

Re: Poll: your musical influence for interest in synthesizers

My influences: pretty much prog through & through; Emerson, Wakeman, TD, Genesis, i.e. the usual suspects (OK, classing TD as prog might be stretching it a bit, but I wouldn't class them as Krautrock either ;) ) Dance in its myriad genres & sub-genres doesn't really hold any interest for me (though ...

Re: What is the Oldest Piece of Gear in Your Studio?

Just scored this on ebay and waiting for it to arrive, but it will be the oldest bit of kit in my studio by several orders of magnitude... tube audio frequency generator: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/BlackRiverFalls/SynthHead/audiofreq.jpg I have one similar to that (not the same, it's a ...

Re: What is the Oldest Piece of Gear in Your Studio?

Odyssey, probably 1973, certainly no later than 74 because that's when the Mk. 2 came out. I'm sure Micke could tell me from the serial number ;)

Re: Yamaha CS-01

As far as I know it's all analogue. Sometimes I wish I'd kept mine, though I'd have preferred a mk II with the full resonance slider rather than the mk I's hi/lo switch. It's a fun synth, especially with the BC-1 breath controller (I kept that & now it gets used (occasionally) with the DX11).

Re: Type of Oscilloscope used for synth calibration?

Well, if you consider that audio frequencies tend to top out at around 20kHz, then even allowing for harmonics you're not going to need anything really high. Mine's 10MHz, but even that's probably overkill for audio work, you really only need the very high stuff for radio-frequency or TV work. I'd s...

Re: Just scored a DX-11

Good find AC, & I thought my first one was a bargain at £60! To add to what others have said, the 11 is also multi-timbral, and has a bunch of alternative tunings available, like Just Intonation, & even quarter & eighth tones. If yours didn't come with a manual (neither of mine did) you can download...

Re: What synth played the opening chords on KC's Give It Up??

Hmm, I thought "just check YouTube", but the only clips I can find are one from TOTP with just him & backing singers, no instruments at all, & one from Chile where he has a Rhodes & what looks like a Clavinet. So not much help there, but as a wild guess I'd say, given an American artist in 1983, tha...
