Re: Effects chains for VSTs?

I agree with Stab Frenzy. Effects are a crucial element in the sound design process, and softsynths benefit greatly from the DSP available via their integration into DAWs. Typically I apply a bit of reverb, delay, and EQ to everything and then add or subtract effects as necessary. I use Live as well...

Re: What do you do your drums with?

I like to synthesize my drums, usually with FM. I use Ableton Operator for this quite a bit, and then render the individual drums to load into Impulse in Live.

Re: If You Could Have Just One Vintage Synth...

I've become somewhat obsessed with the PPG Wave in the last year or so via my use of its softsynth incarnation, so I think I'd have to go ahead and say a Wave for both. I just think its sound perfectly fits my aesthetic and is versatile enough to use for pretty much any sound I want.

Re: Your favorite software synths

Since I got it the PPG Wave 2.V it has pretty much been monopolizing my softsynth usage. It has basically everything I want in a synth, with that very electronic digital character from the wavetables but with the very nice filters to bring things more into the analog realm when needed. Used for pads...

Re: What was the cheapest Synth you ever bought?

Not really a proper synth, but since it has an entry here on VSE I figure it's fair game: Some years back at a sleepover with a friend I was playing around with a Casio SK-1 he had (actually it wasn't even a "real" SK-1 but the version that they rebadged for Radioshack) and decided I liked it so stu...

Re: iPhone Music Apps

The iTM series of apps caught my eye while browsing through the App Store. Very cool stuff, especially for those of us using Ableton Live. I've been wanting a simple piece of hardware to use for launching clips in Live and Matrix looks to be just the ticket. I don't presently own an iPhone but have ...

Re: am i the only one using cubase?

Cubase was the first proper DAW that I ever used, but I didn't stick with it. After discovering Ableton Live I knew I would never be able to use anything else. I've had to use Logic for some classes and although I didn't hate it the whole experience just reminded me of why I love Live.

I'll definitely be on the lookout for one of these on the cheap. I've recently fallen in love with vector synthesis through my experience programming the Wavestation (via Korg's Legacy Collection), and I'm thinking my next major synth purchase may be a Prophet VS.

The Juno-106 was my first synth, so I've definitely got more than a little sentimental attachment to the old guy. Beyond that it's just, to my ears, an incredibly warm and versatile synth that's pretty much perfect for the kind of music I'm interested in (ambient, techno, house etc.). Lately I've be...
