Re: synths: more with less OR less with more?

I've been struggling with this question for a while. When I had just 2 synths I spent ages tweaking them and recording demos. I knew a DX100 inside out at one point in time. I loved creating my own patches and throwing them into the mix. A limited budget made me improvise in order to create. Now I h...

Re: Was the DX100 made just for live-performances?

My first 'real' synth. The ability to wear it as a keytar was certainly part of the appeal when it was launched. It was a DX27 (the 21 is slightly different) in a different box but that box was certainly a selling point.

Re: What synth have you bought more than once?

I wish I could stop buying Roland D50/550's. Have two 550 in the attic and a D50. I don't even use them much!

Stuck with the same PG1000 though !!!??

Re: What is the stupidest accident you've had with you gear?

I once knocked over a cup of coffee and it poured into my JP-8080 and I saw it dying before my eyes. I unplugged it immediately and turned it upside down to let the liquid drain out. For some reason when I turned it upside down I damaged a couple of the knobs and made them a bit wobbly. Having let t...

Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

Don't know if its been mentioned yet....

Whilst listening to a-ha's first album 'Hunting High and Low' I noticed the DX7 bells all over the track 'Love is Reason'.

I have never heard this album before (even though it did come out in 1985) and its chock-a-block with DX7 and Fairlight. Nice.

Re: What Songs Was The Juno 60 Used On.

The Eurythmics used it on most of their early material including Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) They did indeed use a Juno-60 (Roland SH-09 and Prophet 5) during the '83 tour and on the '84 album "Touch", but afaik the bass-riff on the album version of Sweet Dreams was recorded with a Roland SH-09...

Re: Pet Shop Boys 'West End Girls' bassline synth?

They're just miming to playback there. There are lots of contemporary TV shows where Chris is miming the bassline. He always used a PPG Wave, an Emulator II+ or both. Can't work out what he is miming with on this performance of the original Bobby O version though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyBJ...

Re: Pet Shop Boys 'West End Girls' bassline synth?

It was on a BBC Radio 2 documentary from a few years ago (I forget when it was broadcast) but I have it on my hard drive. Both Neil and Hague himself talk about it.

Apparently, Hague spent two days committing the bass to tape as he felt it would be quicker than programming it.

Re: Pet Shop Boys 'West End Girls' bassline synth?

As a big PSB fan I've seen similar threads featuring this question over the years. Many times it has been suggested that the sound is from more than one source. A mini mixed with another synth is the best guess. I don't think it was a sample though. Hague played the whole thing staight to tape with ...

Re: What was the worst synthesizer you've ever owned?

If only they had made a K4m. Don't get me wrong I've heard people get some really great sounds out of the K4. It just didn't inspire me and the filter pops were really annoying. It felt cheap (it was, that is why I had one in the first place!) and had a nasty keyboard. Not to my taste at all. And t...

Re: What was the worst synthesizer you ever owned?

Kawai K4 was cheesy, noisy, very noisy, and not a lot of fun for me. However it was my only 'pro' synth for a few years.

Oh how I suffered. Can still hear it hissing and poping away if I close my eyes.
