Re: Why buy hardware synths?

I'm going to Ibiza for a few weeks (!!!!!) but I will post my opinion when I get back. Yeah, and tell some Ibiza stories also :D You're a composer, so the difference is the same as with playing a part with a violin vs playing a part with Garritan Personal Orchestra. Sound design is then something e...

Re: New Classics

Every synth of today will be a classic. Visiting the Metropolitan and their music instruments collection made me realize this .... check out http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/m ... nstruments

Just an impractical but inspiring long term view...we are still all pioneers in this.

Re: what part "plays" serependity or chance in your music ?

I remember hearing Joey DeFrancesco talking at a hammond seminar once, and he stated something to the effect that he was still surprised at what he played, and he seemed to have gotten the Mystery back. And he's one person I would put in the "mastery" column. Nice quote. My favorite hammondist. :D ...

Re: Your dream synth ?

A U-series Yamaha piano with each string replaced with a hammer action sensor + Oberheim SEM module + amp + loudspeaker + pickup mic. Of course the pickup mics are for providing a feedback loop between the sounding board and the SEM modules that should resonate at a given time ... some FFT math need...

Re: how much is an OBX 8 voice worth?

It's worth quite a lot, as there's nothing else like it. :D (ok, some hyperbole there. But really, it's both very playable and sounds like WOW.)

Way over 2k I think assuming full working condition ie recently serviced. I traded my Xpander + something smaller for 8 voice OBX.

Re: Peter Gabriel and gear used

What about the more recent albums and synths used on those? Just last night listened 'Up' for the first time and was pretty much blown away by the soundscapes and songwriting. I guess the gear used includes pretty much everything, but is there any information about PG's most favored synths/samplers/...

Re: oddball synths

Oberheim Cyclone. Like, what does it do? It's a mystery. Got one by chance. Ok, that's not a synth. So how about SCI Prophet VS? 'Well, we've done these analog stuff, but let's now do a digital synth, but with like a 4-way modulatable mixer between the digital waveforms, let's keep the analog filter...

A highly unscientific example of signal path improvement

Thought about posting these two examples: http://memedesigner.net/audio/EMI62.wav http://memedesigner.net/audio/Duet.wav Both files have 3 Minimoog examples: some modulation mayhem, a bass drone and an arpeggiated sequence. First file is my old signal path: Minimoog -> Soundcraft M8 -> EMI 6/2m -> l...

Re: Is a Yamaha Tyros a synthesizer?

Well, Fantom has the thing I was hoping to be in Wavestation in 1991 - but wasnt there, at least in any useable form - which is to have your own custom waveforms treated similarly to the ROM waveforms. The sampling function is that well integrated into Fantom. Another synth goodie in Fantom is the e...

Re: What has happend to Yamaha and synthesizers?

Yamaha has probably taken note of the fact that most synth development is on the software side. Yamaha is not a software company, but might gobble up, say, Native Instruments, and eventually incorporate Komplete + developments into some uberMotif or go software in a big way.

Re: what age did you get into synthesis?

Won a lottery as a kid in 1979 and got a Yamaha Electone organ with the money. That was heavily used by me & friends for a couple of years. Had been playing a piano at school for some time already. I guess 1982 was the formative year. Listened a lot to Kraftwerk's Man Machine, Logic System's Logic a...
