Re: How did oldschool keyboardists afford so much gear?
Tomita bought a small modular Moog from the money he earned with producing commercials, Stephen According to a keyboard interview with Tomita from 1976 he took out a loan to buy a Moog IIIP w/sequencer around the end of 1971. His work on TV commercial soundtracks enabled him to pay back the loan li...

I'm 100% sure the sound is Roland VP-330.

Re: Tomita - choral sounds on "The Bermuda Triangle"?
To add some things. He was most definitely heavily into post processing Mellotron with his modular, It basically becomes the oscillator rather than the VCO. I'm sure there is no doubt there. The lesser known technique, though certainly talked about by him is the whole approach or laying down control...

Re: Collecting the entire MKS series: Insane goal?
MKS-20 is the digital modeled piano. Supposedly has some fans since it cuts well in a dense mix. Agree the 70 and 80 aren't that close.

Re: looking for a String Synth
Would second the last comment. People familiar with vintage synths know something of String Synths of the 1970s but they don't sound like what you are referring to. Think 70s synth albums and pop that didn't hire an acoustic string section. The only none of the above was Isao Tomita who seemed to do...

Re: The Vangelis Video Thread
I guess the backstory on the 71 Improv clip is it's a TV special shot on film about Georges Mathieu who I guess was the definitive Action Painter of the day. It was shot by documentary filmmaker Frederic Rossif who frequently collaborated in Vangelis. So obviously knowing his subject could paint liv...

Re: Tomita - choral sounds on "The Bermuda Triangle"?
Pity that description didn't bug me when I first read it because I think had dinner with him right after he came back to Tokyo from London as I recall (1999, unfortunately not since). I think his translated interview answer has something to do with the 7 second sustain limit on the Melotron. On "Sou...

Re: lowest prodution run of a major synth manufacturer
I think nearly the majority of these rare synths people are mentioning here are an uncommon, perhaps earlier versions (single Keyboard Prophet 10) or repackagings of something much more common. Like the Fizmo rack which is a lot more common than the never officially released SQ-80m by the way. Also ...

Re: 1492 flute'ish loop
Vangelis for better or worse is very into the the big Korg romplers like the T1. If it sounds familiar look there. As far as I know he's never had the systems like the Fairlight and Synclavier. He's used the Akai samplers in the years following his use of Emulator & Emulator 2. He's had an Emu E4x a...

Re: lowest prodution run of a major synth manufacturer
The CS-50M was the Yamaha CS series synth that never got out of prototype. That's a really gray area, what's a production run and what's just a prototype? For instance the Yamaha VP-1 might be considered a prototype though more than one was made and it had a price. Vail's Vintage Synths book was gro...

Re: Vangelis synthvideo
Reading various journalist comments he likes to do a little demo like this when someone visits. Lots of sounds at once, and remember before home computers that was even more impressive in realtime, nothing really deep or fully formed like he can do when that's his focus. As for recent music he did r...

Re: A question for owners or users of the Synthacon.
Remember with the Doepfer Beauty Case you can indeed build a very small modular for not a lot of money. Doepfer's take on the Synthacon filter is the A-101-1. I wouldn't myself say the Synthacon filter is very similar to their Wasp based filter ( the A-124) but perhaps the way the poster typically u...

Re: Korg wavedrum
By and large it's simply great. In the "it looks like a minus but might be a plus" department the fact that you have to play it manually means it's got to shape or add something to the music you make. You are going to actually play because there is no triggering, MIDI, quantitization, etc. I don't t...

Re: Vangelis docu, with Direct devices
Yes, a very interesting clip. You could glimpse those boxes before in the few rare videos and photos, but it's the closes look yet. What is clear is they are an easier way to recall multiple sounds on multiple synths. I can definitely see a point he's stated, hunting through menus is really somethin...
