Re: DX7 dual voice piano/pad
As above. Just to add, it is possible. But it's very difficult on a DX-7. With key scaling you can even kinda get it to do keyboard splits.

It's not normal, it's not distortion, can you work with a schematic and an oscilloscope?

Re: Synthesisers: technology vs composition
I can sense some hostility in your answers, probably due to the following misunderstandings: Yes this is true, it is due to misunderstandings. As you already pointed out, it's mainly because people don't know who you are. Simply sharing examples of your work would help greatly to understand where y...

Re: Synthesisers: technology vs composition
Great post commodorejohn! - yes, melody is a lost art; elaboration in melody is unfashionable; we know modern exceptions, but they are extremely rare; You've completely missed the point of my question about Steve Reich. You did not even answer it. Let's hear your stuff, the music can speak for itself.

Re: Yamaha cs50
It's cosmetically perfect, and no signs of corrosion, even the caps I can see look minty. I notice some tomfoolery on the PSU. I doubt those parallel resistors are factory. But I could be wrong. But the soldering is horrible. Will they be hard to find ? Yes. In case I would like to sell it in parts,...

Re: Yamaha cs50
Oh no ...😭 Why do you say so Because the CMOS chips will be rotting by now. The key assigner is a common failure. Only way to get one is break another CS poly. If you are lucky, you can bypass the key assigner with the Kenton retrofit kit. Play the synth via MIDI only. I can't be that they have bee...

Re: Synthesisers: technology vs composition
Again, desmond is spot on. Get out there. Get audience feedback, be it online or live when that returns. Next I can tell you about the methods we want to use to reach our goals. Given the way you tend to use categories and characterise your work (rather dogmatically and grandiosely) I don't see how ...

Re: Synthesisers: technology vs composition
I dunno, I love that much EM is more about rhythm and timbre than it is about melody as such. Boards of Canada for example. Would you say that Different Trains, or Electric Counterpoint by Steve Reich have strong melody? Or are you talking about something you could sing? I mention Reich because both...

Re: Bass Sound (Janet Jackson, Howard Jones)
It does sound like one of the classic DX basses, but with more grit. No dynamics, and the attack changes with pitch. I think the DX has been sampled. Possibly into the Ensoniq Mirage, which Jam & Lewis were apparently big fans of. Prophet VS can do this sort of thing too.
