Re: A synth to start with
Based on your background MS20m is a great choice, which is also my all time favorite. From the engineering side you might want to check out the Voltage Modular which has a great MS20 and other vintage inspired modules such as the Arp 2600, Juno-106, TB-303 and Vector. The Core version also includes ...

Re: SNES style synth or VST?
You should really checkout Plogue. Chipsynth MD is my favorite 4-op FM synth, simulating the Genesis. The next product release is going to be the SFC. Not sure when, but based on the conversation on the forums and social media teasers, supposed to be soon.

Yup, and it's free. Spectrasonics also did it with their Liquid Grooves library, which is included in the Stylus RMX.

a Korg DW8000, a Kawai 1 ii, a Kawai 3, and various FM's- Not the same but you know... I own a D-50 and D-110, based from your collection you might like it. It's a simpler, more lo-fi sounding D-50 with crappy fx. But the engine is capable for some interesting result, especially through an outboard...

Re: Is it worth getting a DX7 Mk1?
I want it because its a DX7. I own both the TG77 and 2 DX7s, the TG77 would make similar sound but not as noisy which can be a good or bad thing. The DX7 converter has it's own character which is preferable to some people. The keyboard is one of the best feeling to play the internal engine, which m...

Re: New Roland Boutique.
Yes, a bit curious about it. But I'm more than happy with what it is, the extra waveforms made it fresh.madtheory wrote:You mean the DAC emulation that the VC-1 has?

Re: MicroKorg vs Alesis Ion
I spend way more than that when it was new back then and yes I won't be hesitate to spend the extra bucks if you are into such type of sound. I like the original microKorg as well for it's gritty tone, but I'm more into Ion type of sound. The filter types alone worth the cost addition, especially si...

Re: MicroKorg vs Alesis Ion
I own a microKorg XL and the ION, with some experience of playing the original microKorg. To me it's the ION hands down, it feels like truly playing an instrument. Especially if you are more into a vintage tone, it's a great investment. Just make sure it didn't have the famous output problem or be r...

Don't forget the VirtualCZ which can be used as a SYSEX editor/librarian for the CZ-5000, which is also a very nice CZ-1 emulation.

Re: Tal uno LX vs Korg Legacy polysix
Both are nice, but Roland's remake of the Juno-106 sounds better and more authentic to me. For pads and strings I prefer their Jupiter-8 and D-50. Hopefully Korg will update the Legacy Cell matching the Kronos standard.

Re: Standalone Sequencer
For playing back GM and GS files, I'm relying on the MC-80ex which has a built-in SC-88Pro engine. It has a direct from disk playback which is very useful in a live situation, also two midi outputs for driving external synths. Editing the internal engine is not the easiest things to do, but for play...

Re: Best casio keyboard for PCM
If it didn't have to be a Casio, you might want to check out the D-10 which has a more flexible synth engine. It's a cutdown D-50 with multitimbral feature. I'm using the D-110 which is the rack version and It's my favorite cheesy PCM sound source. If you want to dig deeper, it can be used with an e...

Re: Emu-Emulator I samples
While listening to the E4 library demos, I've heard an almost similar choir. It's not an 8bit samples though and might not be exactly what you are looking for, but maybe worth to listen especially since it's only $19.95 with lots of E-mu's signature sounds. You might also want to check the E-max lib...

Re: New Roland Boutique.
16-note polyphony, just like the original hardware and the plugin. I own 2 D-50s and a D-110, so glad to have it as a plugin with such a great GUI. any better than the VC-1 on the V-synths? I've never compared both, but the plugin includes the extra waveforms and patches from the VC-1, no Standard ...

Re: Korg Wavestation EX vs. DX7
What I'm looking for: DX-ish bass sounds, interesting percussion bits and just general weird/metallic sounds. Maybe you can start with the DX7 for that and for such a price you can get the Wavestation later if still needed. It's no ordinary pad machine, especially through a decent fx processor. Get...
