Re: Why doesn’t the OB-8 get more love?

Why doesn't the OB8 get more love? Because people are ignorant or foolish, that's why. They buy into hype, and hype alone drives a huge portion of the vintage synthesizer market. They believe that if only they had a Jupiter 8, they could somehow achieve THAT sound without any understanding, from an ...

Re: Matrix 12 Vs Jx10

No. Tha's more urban legend synth folklore you hear about. In my experience (since I own them all) the Matrix-12 EGs are a touch slower than the OB8, which is in turn a touch slower than the OB-Xa. The fastest EGs I've heard on any vintage polysynth come from the Prophet-5. The Jup-8 is about the sa...

Re: Matrix 12 Vs Jx10

The Matrix is a killer synth! Contrary to popular beleif, if DOES that a very think Oberheim sound thanks to its filter design and it can sound very SEMish or OB-Xa-ish if you program it as such. But the entire reason for owning one is to create sounds that go beyond the early, raw oberheim tones so...

Re: one line synth reviews

Here's my take on my collection: Oberheim OB-8: You are my favorite all around analog polysynth. Perfect hybrid of analog and digital technology with incredible performance features. Great on the road or in the studio. A near-pefect synth design for its time. SCI Prophet-5: Your sound is outstanding...

Re: First encounter with a Prophet 5... slightly underwhelmed...

OH man, I love the Prophet-5! Not only is it the best looking analog synth ever made, but the sound is just fantastic. Mine is a rev 3.1. Super snappy EGs, so it's great for punchy, percussive type sounds. I also own an Oberheim OB-Xa and an OB-8. I don't spent much time comparing the two because th...

Re: Just got a Oberheim OB8, got some questions!

Negative hfinn.. you are correct in that there's two LFOs on the main panel, but one controls voices 1-4 and the other controls voices 5-8. There isn't a separate LFO for PWM as you describe.

Re: SCI Prophet 5 revision 2 and 3.

Who knows... they both sound good. All Prophets sound good to me so I don't really care about the rev debate thing.

I'm Not The One - synthesizer solo

Quick question. The bugle horn synthesizer solo in "I'm Not the One" from The Cars, do you think it's cool or pure 80s cheese? Also, any guesses as to what synth made that sound? I'm thinking it's just a single oscillator solo from Greg Hawkes' Prophet 5.

Re: Synth in "Relax" by Frankie goes to Hollywood?

dudes, there is absolutely no way the BOW BOW BOOOWWW sound is from a Jupiter-8. None! I owned a Jupiter 8 for many years and I'm very familiar what it does. As you all know, the Jupe is an analog keyboard. There is nothing analog-ish about that BOW BOW BOW sound whatsoever! It's not a square wave, ...

Dudes, the famous Tom Sawyer resonance sweep was an Oberheim OBX, not a Moog Taurus Pedal!

Re: Oberheim OBXa -severely pissed off b***h

Interesting. Just shows how people have different tastes; I think the Xa really shine in 4-pole 24/db mode. That's the setting of the Jump sound, the Stand Back bass and pads, Terminator soundtrack, and so many others. I seldom set mine to 2-pole mode except when I want resonance sweeps. The OB-8 is...
