Re: Thoughts on the Roland JD-XA?
Absolutely gorgeous sound, completely extensive architecture. Consider it a Roland true analogue (DCO) integrated with the sound engine of the Jupiter 80/Integra 7 (just four tones with three partials each, though, not the 256-voice polyphony of the other two). The PCM waves are not hard to get to i...

Re: sw threatening hw value?
I know you're just limiting your discussion to FM, hw vs. sw, but let's just say, I trust my ears, my musical training over many years, my deep study of electronic synthesis, and my own interests and abilities more than I trust any debates on the internet. The debates are just fun, and sometimes, yo...

Re: Expanded Synths vs Standard Models
I remember thinking about this when I went for my very first (new) synth rack module (still have it), the Microwave XT. There was a voice upgrade option that had to be done at the factory, seemed rather pricey. I learned to live with the "limited" number of voices I had. It turned out to be fine. Mo...

I just waited for the economy to go bad and my company to go under.
Worked like a charm!

Re: New Moog apparently...
Man, if this sounds anything remotely like the old Moog Taurus.... I'd buy it in an instant if I had the discretionary income to do so!
Every musical instrument has it's pros and cons and what is a deal-killer for one person is a who-cares for another. That's all instruments, not just synths. Still there is a lot of holy-grail BS flying around all the time. I am amazed at people cl...

Re: Virus TI such a big deal
The specs, and the build quality. It has a quality keybed. It has quality knobs, lots of them. It has high-quality electronics, DACs, S/PDIF. It has lots of I/O, both digital _and_ analogue, that all work next to each other (extremely hard to engineer into a form that's reliable and consistent in I/...

Re: What We Talk About When We Talk About Synths
I have to believe a lot of the "this is better than that.... you'll never be able to do that with this synth" stuff on the internet is mainly people using synth forums to try to market what they have up on craigslist or ebay. :) The reality is, as in all the arts, constraints are good. Let what you ...
I've owned my JV1080 for nearly a YEAR now, and only recently its been getting a lot of studio use! Re: Moog new "Little Secret"
I consider myself a musician who loves all instruments. Nothing is endless, and nothing is perfect and the ultimate do-everything instrument. My desire is to make use of what's to hand, to bring out the music that's inherently possible within the logic of an instrument's constraints. Each instrument...

If that's your dealbreaker maybe it's not the synth for you in the first place
I'm looking at the situation from the outside in, without any bias towards a name brand. Re: Cheapest synth with movable filters
Actually if you're looking for cheap and you already have an iPad, the Korg iMS-20 softsynth is rather good, and hundreds of dollars cheaper than any hardware device you'd find. But that's only if you already have an iPad.

Master's, definitely. Go all the way to Ph.D. if you can. There's no better kind of freedom out there, especially these days. Put off turning into a debt slave as long as you can.
