Re: New analog boxes from Korg?

I live in Japan, so I picked up the Beats and Bass last week (my local music store had sold out of Keys, though). I'll give a few of my early impressions of the boxes. I'm pretty happy with them in general. The Beats doesn't quite have the sound of an 808 or 909, but it is reminiscent of those class...

Re: Korg Monotribe ?

Just picked mine up in Maebashi, Japan for 18,900 yen (about $200) American. I'll come back and post some thoughts about usage in a week or so. Maybe it's a bad idea, but I may give the Monotron to my two year old daughter - get her into synthesis early, y'know

Re: First Purchases

The first synth I bought was a Microkorg, but I made an album on someone else's Roland JP8000 before that. The Juno-60 and JX-3P will serve you well. I recommend running the signal through a tube pre-amp for some grit and making use of those guitar pedals on the synths as well. Have a groovy time wi...

Re: Talk me in or out of a Yamaha CS-10

Thanks for all the CS-10 thoughts! I decided to make my decision based on how much the store would give me in trade in value for the MicroKorg. I made my baseline $120, but they'd only give me $80 for it, so I somewhat reluctantly passed up on the Yamaha. It would have been fun to have a completely ...

Talk me in or out of a Yamaha CS-10

Howdy, Gear lust has set in and I'd love to hear a few opinions. I spotted a very clean Yamaha CS-10 at a local used shop for about $300, which I'm under the impression is a h**l of a deal (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'd have to sell my MicroKorg to fund it, which I'm primarily using for the v...

Re: What was the cheapest Synth you ever bought?

My cheapest synth was my Korg Monotron, but that doesn't really count, yeah? About five years ago I got a DW-8000 for $100. Unfortunately, I didn't really know what to do with it at the time and sold it not too long after. I'm now willing to admit that that was a mistake.

Re: What was the most expensive Synth you ever bought?

My Moog Voyager was by far my most expensive synth at $1,500. But at that price, it was still quite a steal. I talked the music store down $200 because one key wasn't functioning - but once I got home with it it was fine and hasn't failed since. Score!

Re: Synth Documentaries

Oh my, the "New Sound of Music" from 1979 is retro-awesome. Granted, I have a soft spot for cheezy vintage educational films anyway. "Shake Hands With Danger," anyone?

Re: Do You Keep a Synth Just For One Special Sound?

I kept an Akai AX-60 for a while mostly for the messed up tubular bells sound. When I headed back for Japan, however, I handed it over to a punk rockin' friend (who also enjoys insane synth noise). Fortunately, I had my long lost Juno 60 waiting for me here - stored away in my parents-in-law's house...

Re: Moog Voyager XL

I'm sure it will sound like a beast, but my anal-retentive mind is disturbed by the lack of symmetry on the thing. My Voyager barely fits on my table as it is - I can't imagine how I could get something even longer there.

Re: first thing you do when getting a new synth.

I end up spending a few hours trying to brainwash myself by playing strange drones on the new synth. Granted, I tend to go through the presets and tweek them to be drone-y. I also have a bad habit of running all of the oscillators on my new synths until I start recording and realize that that's ofte...

Storing a Moog Voyager

I'm between apartments for a few months and don't really have a place to set up my musical equipment. I've got my Minimoog Voyager in a flight case for the time being. Is there any reason that I shouldn't store it on its side? It would be some trouble to store it flat, but obviously if I need to, th...

Re: insane sounding analog instrument

I wanted to try building a theremin during my senior year of high school. I tried to enlist the help of my class' electronic geek, but it never really took off as we couldn't find the right components. Oh, well. Maybe I'll just buy a commercial one sometime.
