I have various plastic (from studiospares.com) and fabric covers on my stuff - dusting and washing them is much easier than trying to get dust out of all the nooks and cranies of my gear. Also, I keep my door closed, window mostly closed; only my other half is allowed in the studio room etc. etc..

Other softsynths to consider:

Native Instruments' Absynth and FM8 (Reaktor already mentioned).

The obvious thing is amplitude: set it up so that your synth is silent except when you blow (and press a key, obviously). Add to this some filter cutoff mod so that it gets brighter the harder you blow. Alternative is just any modulation which makes timbral changes so you can warp the timbre with bo...

Not free, but cheap. Hosts plug-ins amongst other stuff. Mac and Win versions: http://www.plogue.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=21&Itemid=35 No offence, but "just pretend for all intensive purposes that im completely retarded" is so funny - because the phrase is actually "for all intents ...

Try some other samplers; find one that has better easy-of-use for you. (Try a more modern E-mu—EIV/EIV Ultra series—or an Akai).
Now is a great time to buy hardware samplers; loads of ones that cost thousands going for practically nothing.

The only commercial softsynths I covet (I already own Reaktor and FM7) are Camel Audio Cameleon 5000 (Virsyn Cube rival additive synth), and maybe NI Absynth.

Get a MIDI patchbay. You connect all the MIDI ins and outs from all your MIDI gear to the patchbay. Then you can connect anything to anything without having to rewire anything. I use a DACS one. You plug up to 10 MIDI in and out pair to the back with standard MIDI cables. Then on the front you can c...

I had a Roland DJ-70MkII for a while. Lovely warm sound, filter; bass is good. The architecture does your head in a bit at first (especially if you try to understand it via the manual!), but it isn't really that bad to operate. For some reason I sold it to help fund an E-mu E5000, which I didn't get...

What I have to say I posted already here:

I almost bought a DX9 from my school (this is a long time ago)—they weren't using it any more. But for some reason I didn't in the end. I like how they look similar to the DX7.

I'm not sure how Live handles prog change messages—I never use them. How processor heavy software instruments are varies from hardly at all, to very heavy. E.g. the built in Simpler and Impulse instruments in Live are very light on any computer from the last few years. At the other end of the scale,...
