Re: DW-8000 arpeggio transmit?

As far as I know the DW-8000 does not send out arpeggio data ( at least my early model DW with metal key contacts didn't ).

Re: Ensoniq SQ-80 vs. Roland D-50

I eventually sold both of my ESQ-1s and the D-50. Currently using a Kawai K1-II synth with a Korg EX-8000 for splits and layered sounds and finding I like the combination more than the D-50 or ESQ-1 for programming and overall sound character. Would be nice to have sync or PWM or filter FM or cross-...

Re: Ensoniq SQ-80 vs. Roland D-50

I've owned two ESQ-1s and a D-50... they're both nice machines. The SQ-80 is essentially a ESQ-1 with additional samples and aftertouch so the sonic characters should be quite similar. The ESQ-1 is a breeze to program from the front panel ( actually quite fun, thanks to the excellent display and ver...

Re: Korg DW-8000 contact cleaning help

My DW-8000 had occasional unresponsive keys and hanging notes - cleaning the key contacts helped a lot. Mine was an early unit with metal key contacts ( with gold-plated contact retrofits installed ) rather than silicone rubber contacts - the contacts are in the open when you disassemble the the syn...

Akai AX-60 vs Korg DW-8000 ?

The AX-60 caught my attention recently while googling - would it be a worthwhile supplement to a DW-8000 ? I like the ability to deliver lots of buzzy high harmonics when needed for those edgy cutting aggressive sounds - reviews often say it can be very aggressive sounding, in fact difficult to make...

Re: Korg DW-8000 vs. EX-8000 (vs MS2000r)

Have both the DW and EX here - only other thing DW has besides keyboard is the joystick and arpeggiator - and the two sound identical with the same patches. MS2000 is neat, but didn't like the sound of the filter... but the DW/EX have a great-sounding filter IMHO. Layering the DW and EX is fun.

Re: Prophet VS vs. Roland JD-800 / JD-990

Thanks Ian ! Hadn't considered the FS1R, I'll keep my eyes open for either that or the 990. Reading up on it, the JD-990 seems worth holding out for instead of the JD-800.
Cheers, Mike

Prophet VS vs. Roland JD-800 / JD-990

There is currently a Prophet VS ( keyboard version ) for sale in a music shop in Ottawa. Went through the presets for half an hour, seemed OK but not remarkable, waveforms in isolation sounded very static and lacking sizzle in the top end ( aside from aliasing ). SSM filters sounded nice though. For...

Re: Boss DR 55

A tip for anyone who has a DR-55 with a bad memory chip - the old Intel "5101" RAM chip can be used to replace the Toshiba RAM chip in the DR-55. The Toshiba chip is a clone of the Intel, which is a 256 x 4 CMOS static RAM with separate I/O ports, and very low power requirements for battery backup. ...

Re: Analog FM Synthesis?

Take a look at that bridechamber site that supplies synth module kits designed by some of the people on the sdiy and other lists. One is an analog linear through-zero VCO designed to do largely what one operator of a DX7 does, but in the analog domain, including an adjustable soft sync to help elimi...

Re: Ensoniq SQ-80 vs Roland D50

Owned both an ESQ-1 and a D50. When I decided to sell one to fund another purchase, the D50 was the one the one to go ( after much thought... ). D50 more complex and in-depth, but the ESQ-1 was more "live" and "organic" sounding ( and without need for built-in fx ), and more fun to work with. Both s...

Re: korg poly-61 vs korg poly800 vs korg dw-8000

Yup.... Poly-61 filters are based on a garden-variety dual OTA chip, the LM13600 ( originally made by National Semiconductor ) or NJM13600 ( same thing, from New Japan Radio ). And it's a 2-pole filter, so different sounding than the usual 4-pole filter. And there are loads of 13600 chips around if ...

Re: korg dw 8000 overated or not ?

Definitely don't judge it by the presets :D Takes some familiarization to find the sweet spots, in my experience more so than with many synths of similar complexity. Going beyond saw and square and finding out what the other waveforms are good for takes a while too. Was initially rather underwhelmed...
