Re: Kiwi-3p - Experiences?

Yes, there are modes where it will sync to the incoming MIDI tempo at various subdivisions.

Re: Aliasing

Having the filter roll off doesn't reduce aliasing. It reduces high end, which can camouflage aliasing. Key follow will just make the filter cut-off track with keys. That actually won't help hide aliasing in most cases, unless you have the filter rolled down. There's no reason to accept audible alia...

Re: The "Fake" PWM method

SO... Osc sync IS pwm! Morevover, it modulates the width of ANY waveform! No, absolutely not. Oscillator sync RESTARTS the waveform, which for any wave other than a pulse wave, results in a different (and more complex) waveform, not width modulation. That's why oscillator sync produces new timbres....

Re: Gary Numan drum machine on "The Fury"

I recall reading an interview where Numan said during this period of time he'd sample processed drums, then process them again, then sample them again, etc. I'm guessing that monster snare sound on The Fury is some combination of a sampled drum hit and lots of processing, then re-sampled and trigger...

Re: Roland JX3P and PWM

I have a JX-3P (with the KiwiTechnics mod). I tried (before and after the mod was installed) to emulate PWM as has been described. In theory, it should work. In practice, it sounds like oscillator sync. I suppose one could try this same emulation trick on any synth with sync AND PWM. Rather than foc...

Re: Hand clap sound????

Handclaps are very difficult to synthesize well. The original drum machine handclaps are themselves poor imitations of real handclaps, which are themselves difficult to record and have sound good. Typical drum machine clap sounds do consist of several attacks/impulses of noise in very close proximit...

Re: Drum machine recommendations?

The answer is kind of "what matters to you?" The Tempest is similar to other DSI gear: - It is very deep, powerful, and extremely programmable -...but that means you MUST invest time in learning how to program it to get great sounds. - People don't like the preset sounds, it doesn't come with a bunc...

Re: Devo Hardcore Live

Mark had 4 synths visible on his table at the Oakland/San Francisco/Bay Area show. He had a Moog Voyager right next to a MiniMoog. These were set up and tilted in such a way that you could not see clearly what else was behind them. He actually didn't play either of the Moogs very much, relative to t...

Yeah, I caught that, too. I took that to mean the multi-mode 2-pole filter was at least partially designed by Tom Oberheim!

Re: Kraftwerk 3D

I was also at the show. The "ravey" reimaginings were basically "The Mix" versions. They were clearly NOT playing notes on MIDI keyboards - even from my balcony seats, that was obvious. I got the impression they were triggering loops or sections (MIDI or audio) in realtime. There were at least 2 obv...

Re: JX-3P to Kiwi-3P

LFO2 has a second "random" mode that can be synced to MIDI clock, but that's it.

I have this upgrade and I think it is well worth it.

DSI will sell them direct (at least in the USA) if they have them in stock.

Re: Prophet 12 new user review

I bought mine based on the internet videos, watching DSI staff demonstrate it in SF, and on my previous experiences with other DSI gear. I have absolutely no regrets. It's a great instrument.
