Re: What ever happened to Geddy Lee's giant Oberheim/Moog Sy

As far as I know Keith loved his Moog. He said one of the biggest reasons he used it live was the theatrics of it, having that giant beast up there on stage. He's even had it on some more recent tours, and has said that if its out before the show starts where people can see it everyone is like real...

Re: What ever happened to Geddy Lee's giant Oberheim/Moog Sy

I'd guess Rush have a warehouse of some sort, someplace. So the remnants might have been sitting in a box for the last 30 years. On the other hand it's possible they were sold off at some point, and someone has some or all of that 8 Voice and doesn't know it was a celeb owned instrument. i grew up ...

video rundown of Derek Sherinian's keyboard rig

i just got the September issue of Keyboard magazine (Hall of Fame cover) in the mail today. the table of contents plugs a video tour of Derek Sherinian's keyboard rig for the recording of a new Black Country Communion album. video tour of Derek Sherinain's sweet keyboard rig he's got a really tasty ...

Re: Yamaha CS80's "wiggling" keys?

when i saw the title of this thread, i couldn't help thinking of that old Keyboard magazine interview with Brian Eno where he (mistakenly) mentions a Yamaha synthesizer with these "wobbling" keys. For instance, there's a Yamaha synthesizer whose keyboard wobbles from side to side to make a vibrato e...

Re: Rack Sampler Advice

you gave up too easily (and quickly). the Roland VariOS is just what you're asking for in a 1U not-too-ancient package. it was a woefully badly marketed oddball with multiple schizophrenic Sybil personalities that Roland never quite figured out what to pitch it as - a virtual Jupiter 8, a virtual TB...

Re: The Prophet 5

New Muzik - great selection, I always loved the production on their synth-pop confections. Never got into Level 42 though. Yellow Magic Orchestra were also big users of the Prophet 5 (and they are coming to the Hollywood Bowl this summer!) Some of my favourite albums featuring the Prophet 5 are...R ...

Re: Tonal difference between OB-Mx and Xpander

i have two OB-Mx (twelve and ten voices), an Xpander and a Matrix-12. i've never done it but i suppose if you open up their filters all the way and zero all modulations so you're just comparing VCO triangle waveshape to VCO triangle waveshape side-by-side, you could generally say they both have simi...

Re: Guess the synth: OB-X or Prophet 5

I can photograph the manual patchboard for the settings and post them if it helps and a description! i'd be really interested in seeing these too! maybe it would be a good forum project to see if we could manage to dial up each of these sounds from Micke's quiz? then if this programming project tur...

great challenge, Micke! OK, here goes my guesses: 1a) P5 b) P5 c) P5 d) P5 2a) OB-X b) P5 3a)OB-X 4a) P5 b) OB-X 5a) P5 b) OB-X c) P5 when the correct answers are revealed, it would be appreciated if anyone could state the rationale why it is for sure that synth and not the other. bonus points for d...

Re: Trent Reznor on The Social Network score

Watching this movie is like putting on a 3 hours long ambient record... but with awesome images full of meaning (a bit like Baraka, but in some ways). Nobody can film nature like Tarkovski. Just the way he films seaweed in the beginning of the movie, it's just so hypnotic. Makes you feel what it is...

Re: Can you suggest a step sequencer that filters external a

the MS-2000R was my first thought too. the three track step sequencer totally kills! very under-rated synth.
