Re: can FS1r get as rough and dirty as DX11?
thanks a lot folks! i'm definitely more into FM-dirt than converter's or effect's dirt. maybe 'dirt' is not the right word for the metallic yet crunchy grit that i seek. as long as i can exploit this kind of basses, i'm raving mad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_uO6JIyLRk http://functionoperate.ba...

can FS1r get as rough and dirty as DX11?
hi people, haven't posted here in years, i'm glad to see you still rocking. so, can FS1r get as rough and dirty as DX11? FS1r is supposed to be able to reproduce classic DX7 patches, and DX11 is similar to DX7. but from what little i heard of FS1r and user's comments, that machine is known for being...

Re: great SH-101-driven tracks
Skanfrom's albums sound like they're almost entirely sh 101, with occasional tr 606. Great stuff. A 101, a yamaha sy-88 i think (for samples), and very likely a 606. It was all produced with nearly nothing. his 'labelboss' claimed that he used 101 exclusively, even for the rhythm. supposedly, the o...

stone age methods today
although many of us here on VSE have decent setups in our bedrooms [at least a good pc, a mixer and a couple of synths], i'm sure that there are still people who haven't 'upgraded' to that yet, and they still use very limited means for creating and recording music. so - what are the most 'spartan' m...

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever heard someone say about synths
here's one classic, from the biggest music gear store in belgrade: ME: hello, i'd like to buy a midi sequencer. do you have any? or perhaps, can you show me some catalogues of roland, yamaha, akai etc with midi equipment? SALESMAN [seemingly in late teens, earring in one ear and self-confident smile...

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever heard someone say about synths
hm, i've heard many workstation owners claim their workstations are "analogue, man, they also have ADSR knobs". or how about this: i know a guitar-based alternative rock band which throws some samples here and there in their songs. once they were considered to be invited to perform on an all-electro...

Re: What songs has the Juno-60 been used on?
david harrow used it as a main synth on many 80's anne clark albums: changing places, pressure points, joined up writing... check out her 'wallies' maxi, i think it's 808+juno60 straight.

Re: Why do presets universally suck?
i hate to lead the thread further off the topic, but you guys keep talking like [example]: If you can PLAY the synth and people are enjoying it, who cares? of course, most listeners don't care if you use presets or not. but my point is that a musician shouldn't choose his methods / tools / professio...

Re: Why do presets universally suck?
to preset or not to preset? that question isn't about quality of music, it's about ethics of creativity. it's not so crucial when you want to use ready made acoustic banks from a rompler, but it's a dilemma with the 'synthetic' sounds, so what i'll be writing down is gonna be about 'synthetic' music...

Re: Why do presets universally suck?
i haven't tried many modern synths, but in the 80's, factory presets usually tried to emulate acoustic instruments and that was always horrible. i always thought that synthesizer's biggest strength was synthetic-sounding sound, and acoustic sounds always suck. even on my nord rack 1 there's tons of ...

Re: Best Software Synths which *are not* Emulators?
sorry for the late reply! glad to see the discussion rolling on. some say that a good song is a good song, no matter how played and recorded. trevor horn [who made so many hit records] says 'good idea is a good idea', but it takes also technical talent and means to give it a good final shape, otherw...

Re: Mount Sims Wild Light
i saw them live and they didn't use any synths, only bass guitar, the rest was going from laptop, and there was no playing softsynths neither. mat sang and moved great, though. i don't know which synths he used on white light, but i think 90% of their character came from external overdrives, distort...
