It maybe powerful (the closest thing to a modular polysynth I guess) , but
I think it's more of a pad machine, making rich and layered pads and strings, but it sounds a little soft and weak for punchy stuff (which other, perhaps more limited polysynths like CS80 or prophet seem to do better)

There is one interesting synth that I find makes nice strings (close to classic string machines), and it's Korg PS3300. Of course I never seen one, but I have a nice album called Aquarythmies, which is entirely recorded on PS3300 (and some bass monosynth for bass lines) , and it has some nice rich s...

That's the same ARP that shows up in the 1978 picture

Not sure but I think it belonged to Francis Rimbert , and was originally from 1974

Was that when he visited the ole Jarre.net forum years back regarding his comments on Aero? (Jarre geek alert everyone! )
I remember him saying about the Oxygene 4 lead being an ARP too.
I wouldn't be surprised he talked with him in person actually.

OB 2 voice was on photo. OK but it doesnt mean that it was used on Equinoxe :) JMJ had Rhodes and many other things that can be seen on pictures but were not used on album. anyway. thanx 4 comment. it's not easy to make a faithful replica :) But same can be said about ARP too: it was in the list an...

There is a picture of Jarre studio from January 1978 showing an ARP2600 with a moog-ladder filter.

He also had an orange one later on (with a new apr filter) though I'm not sure when he got that one.

But at the time of recording of Equinoxe, he indeed did have a moog-filter ARP

Wow, that's impressive. Is JMJ going to give you a job as programmer? It would be cool if you could get your hands on an OB 2 voice for comparison- some of the ARP sounds are not quite like the original, and I don't think it's lack of programming skill :) Did you use the ARP sequencer, or MIDI? OB ...

I don't think he was actually aiming at the EXACT sound for the brass sequence. At least not the album version

That is so ironic. The booklet of remastered CD for Equinoxe says something like:
many thought his machine-intensive music couldn' be played live, and he decided to prove them wrong....bla blah..leading to Place de la Concorde

Just listened to some samples of that metasonix. Sounds horrible, except for the extremely fat basses.
It either distorts everything by default or they used really annoying patches to demonstrate it.

tube synths?

Were there any notable tube modular synths in the vintage past?
Or perhaps string machines or some other kind of instrument.

Well I don't KNOW anything of course, but some people claim it to be an eminent preset, here is a demo of eminent showing it at around 4:08: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVr72UcCvkk on the other hand at Place de la Concorde , Jarre seems to be playing this sound on CS60 if I remember correctly I d...
