The TR 606 works great for me, but the lack of MIDI does kind of limit it in some ways. Another great cheap 808/909 type machine is the Novation Drumstation, but unfortunately it only has the drum kits, and no sequencer. Great sound tweaking capabilities though.

Is it possible to save a "patch" with keyboard split, arpeggiator or motion control as a "performance"? It's clear that the Patch and Performance sections are separate...so can I only create new performances by editing old ones, using the "performance" patches? Thanks alot for any help!

I like the Unicorns too...they use a Jupiter 8, and you can make lots of similar sounds on a Juno. My first synth was a Juno 106, and it did a great job teaching the basic parameters of synth sounds.
