Re: Anyone recognizes Synth at Tears For Fears 83?

Prophet 5 Rev 3.

The tape controls on the upper right portion of the control panel and the master volume knob bottom center of the tuning/tape control section give it away.

Re: Ensoniq sqr getting very hot during operation

Not sure this helps, but I've had mine on a bench for a while, trying to fix it when I find the time. Mine got hot, too, right before the audio went out. The digital side of the circuitry (which operates at 5V) works fine, but the 12 V side of the power supply, which controls the audio, keeps frying...

Re: How many of you still have your first synth?

Sold my first (Juno-106 bought brand-new in the summer of 1984). Do I miss it? Nah. OTOH, I sold my second synth (one of the first ESQ-1s to hit the market in 86) in 1993 and kicked myself for doing so for years. Finally bought a beat-up one a couple of years ago, and restored it with the help of so...

Re: anyone using the "hidden waves" EPROM V3.53 on their ESQ

It's not just you. It's a bona fide glitch in the OS. Does it to me, too, and no amount of resets will fix it. Mildly annoying, but not a deal-breaker. I can bring the waveform back down to a sawtooth wave using the data slider. A small number of the extended waveforms are quite useful, actually. Mo...

Re: ESQ-1 Keys not Sounding

Bah - I feel like the guy with the "phantom problem" whose car starts running fine at the mechanic's front door.

Problem fixed, but I really can't explain how.

ESQ-1 Keys not Sounding

O.K...I have an ESQ-1 that is turning into my "perpetual project"....this question is for the ESQ experts out there. After working flawlessly for several months since I completely overhauled the unit, I now have a group of 5 keys that don't want to work. Fourth octave on the keyboard, E, F, F#, G, G...

Re: sq80 battery replacement / top cover

Check to see if the left side of the cover is rubbing against the pitch/mod wheel/disk drive housing as you lift it. Same thing happens when I open my VFX. It's the same basic case design as the plastic case ESQ, SQ-80, and the SD-1. It's a pretty tight fitting lid.

Re: Changing ESQ-1 Battery

+1...to really do it right, you need to remove the PCB and solder the battery to it from the underside. It's a pain in the rear, but it will ensure the battery is secure and that you don't drip solder on the topside components or accidentally hit something with the soldering iron. I labeled all of t...

Re: ESQ-1 Pitch Wheel and Key Issues

Me and rhino have been messing with ESQs for a while. I've gotten two old metal-case units up and running in the last two months, and I agree with rhino that you might want to try to spray some contact cleaner on the pitch and mod wheel pots and re-mount them in the old housing so it fits the origin...

http://www.midiworld.com/quadrasynth/qs_swlib.htm Here is a rather good-quality PDF of the keyboard versions to get you a start. First thing, check the minus-15-volt line (and it's regulator) Thanks, man, but that's the Alesis QS, not the Ensoniq SQ... I checked all voltages coming off the transfor...

Ensoniq SQ-R Schematic/Service Manual

Well, I got given a broken Ensoniq SQ-R by a friend. Figured I could get it working again, but after a few weeks of flying blind, I'm officially stuck. Problem: no audio. Digital side works (display works and the unit receives MIDI). Audio side doesn't. It keeps blowing the two 2A 250V fuzes. Does a...
