Re: The 4-op Yamaha DX synths

It becomes even more confusing when certain FM engines overlap or are compatible with others.

I used to edit a TX81z using a Yamaha DX21. Every function was alike other than the few differences between them (Pitch envelope Generator on the DX, waveform variants on the TX, etc)

Re: The 4-op Yamaha DX synths

Hi Tiger Jackson, The DX100 can work but you would be better served with a multitimbral and multi waveforms engine like the Yamaha TX81z and family (DX11, V50, YS100/200, TQ5). Which is what the Genesis FM part is most closely related to. edit: If you want the earlier arcade FM sound, the Yamaha FB-...

Re: Yamaha PSS-480/580/680 firmware?

Hi and thanks for your suggestions, coldwar. I did consider a really small notebook for that... Yes, PSS-Edit opened up this synth beyond what the front panel offers. I also like its flavor better than the Fb01, Tx81z, despite the limitations. 5 user slots are just not enough for a multitimbral mach...

Re: Yamaha PSS-480/580/680 firmware?

Thanks for taking time to answer, Rasputin. It doesn't look to have any socketed ICs and everything is done on the main sound chip/cpu, I think. I have the service manual but no technical knowledge. The saved patches stay in storage as long as the power adapter is plugged in (whether unit is on or o...

Re: Yamaha PSS-480/580/680 firmware?

Replacing the Rom sounds would indeed make more sense.

Are the 100 preset patches written in from sysex files?

Re: Yamaha PSS-480/580/680 firmware?

I wasn't quite sure where and how to ask about this.

Increasing the number of save slots is more what I had in mind than replacing the onboard sounds.

Yamaha PSS-480/580/680 firmware?

Hello Explorers,

Does anyone know if a firmware revision or update was ever released for these Yamaha keyboards? I'm wondering if there's a way to permanently replace the rom presets with custom ones.

Re: I made a rainstorm/set of patches for the TX81z

That's just excellent work.... I'm amazed at the realism of everything combined. Especially the pitter patter of water droplets. =D> The most fun I had with a Yamaha DX21 was also programming rain and thunder sounds after hearing it in a video game..,,I would split the keyboard to play both and just...

Re: Which synth is this? Maybe a Virus?

I misread the post at first but the top keyboard you see is a Roland A-50, 76-note midi controller.

Re: E-Mu Proteus MPS Orchestral Plus vs Proteus Rackmount?

You have to factor in the effects of the MPS, which would make the patches more unique than the Proteus racks. The piano samples aren't the same either. They come from the E-mu PROformance module. I believe the Proteus FX has none of the factoy presets found in the MPS+ keyboard, but I'm not entirel...

Re: Looking at Proteus /1 and /2

I honestly love the old Proteus series. I used most of them with the exception of the Pro-Cussion and MPS Keyboards. They are simple and fast to use. Even had a Proteus/1 with the Protologic expansion at some point.

I personally could do with just having a Proteus 2 module at my disposal. :)

Re: Xanadu movie (yeah, the 1980's with Olivia Newton-John)

I never cared much for the movie but I always liked the soundtrack. Great ELO songs and ONJ at her peak. I still have the vinyl and there's a great shot of the Arp2600 in the ineer sleeve pictures...The girls aren't bad looking either :)
