Re: Synthesizers - Where to start

I think you need to think about other things you've learned like this in the past, and figure out what kind of learning style and starting conditions fit you best. Some people need to start with something over their heads with a lot of room to grow, and unknowns to explore. Other people need to stri...

Re: Which is historically more important: The TR-808 or the Linn LM1?

The importance of the 808 is not dependent on the LD, or sampling. Even if we didn't have sample based rythm, the 808 would still be influential for all of the other reasons mentioned. In fact, it might even be more important and influential in that scenario, if the only technology would be derived ...

Re: Which is historically more important: The TR-808 or the Linn LM1?

I would have to go with the TR-808. Tr-808 samples are almost obligatory, even if you don't own or use physical a drum machine. The Linn Drum is not quite as widely distributed or sought after as the 808. The Tr-808 is the gold standard of pure analog drum machines. When someone makes an analog drum...

Re: Maschine - should I switch?

When you buy Machine, you should get both the hardware and the software. I have the original version, which at this point is probably a dinosaur. It's fully capable of doing whole songs, and since it came out they've taken it into the DAW direction, so I would safely assume you would have absolutely...

Re: Is there such a thing as too many soft synths?

The answer is going to depend on the person. Some people have a hard time focusing if they have too many options. Other people feel bored if they don't have enough to explore. I think if the synths aren't bothering you, there's no need to get rid of them... especially since they're not taking up any...

Re: Can you use internal and external sounds at the same tim

I think I understand exactly what you're trying to do. Do you see an audio input jack? Something that would allow you to plug a cable into the organ and play external sounds through its speakers? If so, you could connect a sound module's audio output to your organ so you can hear the sounds play thr...

It was probably around 2010-2012. Definitely by 2012!

Re: Still possible to get a Juno 60 for a good deal?

I don't know what a reasonable price is per se, but I got harassed when I tried to sell a Juno-60 here for around $700 in the past by people saying the price was too high. No matter what value it is, I feel like people will always think it's too high, unless it goes back to that brief period of time...

Re: VCV Modular -- and it's FREE!

This is an amazing piece of software! Thanks for posting meatball. At first I couldn't figure out how to log in through the software itself... After searching around I found that some of the fields at the top right were "permanently" inaccessible to me, no matter how much I stretched the window. Wha...

Yup. We used to mic the amp, arm the track the mic was connected to, then listen to everything through headphones.

Re: Help with drum machine choice

Mac vs PC plays no role. Its probably coming down to how powerful and dedicated your computer is, and what else is running and taking up resources. What you need to do is "print" the rhytm you wrote and use that instead of trying to play the whole thing using your cpu. What that means, is that you w...

Re: Advice for a pianist interested in making electronic mus

I think if you love the sound of the Montage, it might be a good idea to go for it. Is that what your gut is telling you you to go with? Remember, you can always buy a sequencer or even use your computer or a tablet or something with a little interface for that if you really want something complex. ...

Re: Advice for a pianist interested in making electronic mus

As madtheory pointed out, there are some specific cases where the general observation I made about workstations doesn't apply - the Kronos probably being one of the strongest examples. Why don't you look into it? Also, don't forget about the V-synth! Just speaking for me, a computer with software an...

Re: Advice for a pianist interested in making electronic mus

I agree with Madtheory here. I would get a decent controller, or fix the one you have, and then fill a nice rack with a variety of quality rack synths, or other pieces you can control, like the mini-clone. I don't want to neccesarily steer you away from workstations if that's what you're excited abo...
