Re: Your Rig---but 20 Years Ago
The only thing I had 20 years ago was my SK-5, which I'm happy to say I still own. Unfortunately, I was also a dumbass 11 year old kid who thought Nintendo was way cooler than making music. You're a similar age to me (I was 13 20 years back) but I thought doing music was cooler than just about anyt...

Re: Best Synth Programming Interface Ever?
I'm surprised that people are even mentioning software here... Anything driven by a mouse is instantly going to be slower and more awkward to use as you can't use muscle memory for it. It's supposedly going to be more awkward because you can't use muscle memory? 1. You can use muscle memory with a ...

Re: ROMpler sample packs?
hmm.. actually those ebay sample packs would be good enough, although I feel bad supporting them. I did once and they're almost always someone else's sample pack ripped verbatim and resold. Not to mention the fact that manufacturers really don't like people sampling machines that are still in produ...

Re: DX7s & Atari STE or mac editor
I'm sure I have a freeware editor or two on a disk but it's not here with me and won't be for at least a couple of weeks, send me a PM to remind me and I'll reply with the file(s) when I have them.

Re: An interface with decent inputs
Hmmm, but the problem is quite opposite, synth-to-mixer sounds great, synth-to-interface sounds dead. What does synth-to-mixer-to-interface sound like? The fact is that most interfaces above a certain price point/level of quality shouldn't be that much different (and should be pretty accurate) so c...

I use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) which you should be able to find at any electronics retailer... I'd recommend an aerosol can of the stuff for getting into the switches.

You do realize that e.g. FM8 has well over 700 buttons/sliders in total? You want 25 square feet worth o' sliders ...

Re: Field Recorders...
The one time I used an H4n (actually three of them, for a live filmclip shoot) when I pressed stop at the end of the (only) take I got a 'data write error' from one of them, and the recording was missing. This understandably sucked. I don't know if it's something that's been rectified with subseque...

Re: Allen & Heath GS3
I know a guy who's had a number of A&H mixers over the years. According to what he has said, they're very good and generally reliable but can be very difficult to repair if something does go wrong.
Still, I quite fancy one myself.

As an example, I can practically touch type with my EX7 simply because I'm so used to it. Yes it has menus and yes ...

Speaking as someone who is a former electro-mechanical and electronic engineer as well as someone who loves drone metal... That guy has some serious talents to combine them together so well.

Re: Field Recorders...
I've had a Zoom H4 for 3 years or so now and have used it so much (thousands of hours of recording) that all the legending has worn off. It's a cracking thing for most purposes but the mic preamps are pretty noisy at high gain (I record alot of low level sources so this is a problem for me) and wind...

Re: Ultimate Sound Design via Synthesis!
yamaha ex5 I'd go with that (though mine is the lesser EX7). Actual hardware synth wise, it would be a close toss up between the Andromeda I'd go with that too! But for me it's what you can do with a whole combination of things rather than just one synth... Field recordings, VST's, synths, hardware...

Re: do you think MIDI interfaces are going obsolete?
I have alot of MIDI hardware and intend to get more so I hope MIDI interfaces don't fall by the wayside just yet!
And despite it's flaws, I'm a big fan of MIDI in general.
