Re: Overheating?
Not trying to hijack the thread, but my DX7 has been getting quite warm in the middle section of the back panel when it's left on for more than a half hour. it is working just fine, but I do detect a slight electrical / ozone smell when it heats up. any ideas?

Re: Synths and You (the collection of opinions)
it's been a few years since I replied to this thread, and, since my feelings towards certain models have changed and I've bought and sold several more than I had back then, I'll do this again! so here goes: 1) The synth that made you want to play music: I said something about Kraftwerk's "Computerwe...

I recently acquired a very charming old Hohner P100 home keyboard, and have been having a blast making dorky keyboard songs with it. It’s nice to take myself less seriously than usual.

Re: Should I trade my microKORG for a Roland XP60
I think the XP60 has a wonderfully juicy filter, even for being the epitome of 90s digital. You can get some gorgeous pads out of the thing

Re: moog grandmother
I'm pretty intrigued by the synth itself, and I love the idea of including a real spring reverb. I don't understand why Moog has chosen to initially release it exclusively through Guitar Center. This makes me feel weird about it, like Moog is sort of whoring itself out to a company that isn't even d...

Re: Moog DFAM
That video was awesome. I watched it three times in a row and am already trying to figure out a way to finance one of my own. Some of the coolest electronic percussion sounds I've ever heard. Yeah! Musical ideas instantly started popping off. Already inspired by the creative possibilities of the DF...

Re: What were popular synths in early 90's pop?
I think the SH101 was quite popular during this time. I’m not positive that it was used on these albums, but most of these basses you mentioned are certainly possible on the SH.

Re: Is it worth getting a DX7 Mk1?
Ah! Thanks for the correction. I didn't realize the Genesis had 4operator FM capabilities! Was that the same chip used in the DX100 then?commodorejohn wrote:The sound chip in the Genesis was a YM2612, so 4-operator, but yes, pretty rudimentary by comparison to the DX7. Still got that distinctive FM sound, though.

Re: Is it worth getting a DX7 Mk1?
It's interesting that you should bring up the Sega Genesis sound comparison. Interesting, in that the Sega Genesis actually had built in Yamaha FM synthesizer chips to handle all in-game music and sound effects! I think they were YM3812 chips though, so only 2 operators per voice as opposed to the 6...

Re: The most influential electronic instruments of all time?
For influential artists, check out Pierre Schafer's pioneering work in "Musique Concréte", a style of proto-ambient music that focused primarily on using tape splices to create sound collages which were often very unsettling, otherworldly pieces that would have fit nicely into movies like Nosferatu ...

Re: One JP8000 or two JP08s?
I had a JP-8000 for a while and thought it sounded brilliant. It does have its limitations, and does tend to get glitchy when you push it into extreme modulations. Some of these limitations started to really bother me after a while, and I sold it off in favor of a Yamaha AN!x. Why does the feedback ...

Re: Looking for synth recommendations
Then again, the AN1x fails on the full size keyboard. Good God in Heaven. Are you serious right now? How are they not full size keys? Are they one millimeter narrower than the keys on your piano? Who can possibly notice such a difference? If it is indeed "just enough to mess with muscle memory" as ...
