I would suggest the Microbrute! It has an onboard sequencer (easy and fun to use), plus plenty of knobs to adjust every available parameter. Sounds good, and cheap, too! I would look for a used one, should be able to get one for about $200...

Thanks for sharing! It's funny, I watched a video where he was interviewed in his studio a few years ago, and at the time it seemed like all he was interested in doing was using the virtual instruments and effects in Logic Pro.

I can recommend the Onyx Blackjack. Works seamlessly with my mac and Logic. Didn't need to load any drivers/software, etc. -- just plug and play. Sounds good to my ears, and is usb-powered. Very well-built, too!
