Re: How do you rate Prince on synths?

I was never a big enough fan to buy his albums nor did I go see Purple Rain in the theater. I was 14 when "Purple Rain" came out. It was rated R, so I didn't see it until much later, on DVD, where it was disappointing. But now our local theater is showing it on the big screen and I watched it Satur...

How do you rate Prince on synths?

Prince's guitar chops have gotten a lot of press lately.* How do people rate him on synths: As a player? (I realize that the Revolution already had two keyboard players, Matt Fink and Lisa Coleman. I don't know whether Prince also played himself for recordings.) As a sound designer? * Recent article...

Re: That everpresent 80s Juno pad

Thanks for posing this question, Fredthehound, and thank you, Alex E., for posting that Enya song. (Probably hadn't heard that since I was in grad school.) Even though it was the wrong sound, I learned a couple of things about my own Juno 6 from trying to copy it.

Re: Synth shopping in Japan

I lived in Nara about twenty years ago, and didn't realize how lucky I was until much later (or how much slack the locals were really cutting me). Even then I didn't mind the giggles on the train platform: it was rural, I was different, and they weren't sneering. I look forward to going back, even f...

Synth shopping in Japan

I'm hoping to visit Kyoto sometime in the next year. 1. Are there any synth shops I should peek into? 2. I'm not looking for anything in particular. I know I can't take back a full-size keyboard. Is there anything I should look for that will fit in a carry-on bag? (I realize that's a broad question.)

Re: Best Synth Teacher

I bought a big subtractive synthesis book from amazon at the same time I got my Ion. I had no idea what ADSR envelopes were, i didn't even know how to make an "automated filter sweep" at the time. And happily I found every single item in the book on the Ion. So I kinda learned everything from that ...

Re: Sync an old Roland arpeggiator with CV?

I just checked the Juno 6 service manual; if it gives a voltage, I can't find it. The Juno 60 service manual lists it on the first page under specifications: "Arpeggio Clock Input: 1 step/pulse=+2.5V or more." That last part is ambiguous: is 8V "more" or "too much"?

Re: Sync an old Roland arpeggiator with CV?

also thats some kind of typo in the arturia copy thats had some of us mildly confused for a bit, since gate signals dont scale. some synths require different voltages for a gate to fire, but that isnt a variable factor within a synth. likely someone just put 1V/oct to describe pitch and gate becaus...

Sync an old Roland arpeggiator with CV?

Since I got my Juno 6, I've been looking at ways to sync the arpeggiator with my MIDI gear. I've come up with a few so far: the sync signal from a Korg Volca will produce eighth notes; the Korg SyncKontrol app can do the same thing (and produce 16th notes if I double the bpm); so can a drum machine,...

Re: Jupiter 6 Vs Proph 08

I've never played a Jupiter 6. I do have a Prophet 08 and, last month, I bought a Juno 6 on eBay. I know it's not the same as a Jupiter anything, but my brain was wired to like the Juno, simply by growing up in the 1980s (I graduated from high school in 1988). That said, owning the Juno has helped m...
