Mono/Poly Tuning

My trusted old Mono/poly seems to be slowly developing a bit of a tuning issue. Initially I noticed one day, that to get it to standard pitch, I had to turn the master tuning knob down considerably, to about 8 o'clock. I took it to me local repair guy who is generally excellent, but not a synthesize...

Re: Acoustic vs Synth

imitating other instruments is "a" use for a synthesizer, but not "the" use of a synthesizer. A synthesizer breaks sound down into it's basic elements of pitch, timbre, envelope, and things like modulation, portamento etc. A pipe organ certainly can allow the user to control pitch, and to a reasonab...

Re: Size doesn't matter... or does it?

Currently using a 3 keyboard rig. I might like as many as 6, but that is the max.
I only want what I need though. I'm not really into excess.

Re: Modding a synth: disrespectful ??

I think it is situational. If a mod makes the instrument more functional and thus gets used more, then there is really nothing wrong with that. But if I had to choose between two vintage synths, one with mods and one in original condition, I would almost certainly go with the original. I painted the...

Re: What should each company make next?

Basically, this thread could be named "EVERYONE SHOULD MAKE ANALOG SYNTHS, PRONTO (preferably remakes of 70s stuff)" And in keeping with that: KORG - do with the polysix and mono/poly what you did with the ms20 mini...except don't make them mini. Moog - Remake the minimoog. No memory, no phatty or ...

Re: Do a lot of the old analog synths have headphone ports?

My Korg Mono/poly does and like the minimoog, you can turn off the main output to adjust patches with headphones.
Not sure if the polysix did that or not, since it had a memory.

Re: How important are a synth's presets?

I like to go through the presets to look for ideas, but I grew up with analogs without any presets, so I am accustomed to just making my own sounds. Even when I got my m1 (when they were the new hottest thing) I at least tweaked almost every preset, or just replaced them with my own. To this day my ...

Re: Favorite Mellotron performances.

No mention of arguably the most heard mellotron line...the flute in Strawberry Fields? Brief but iconic.

I'm not sure there is a bad mellotron line though. I have always loved the sound of them.

Re: Need something cleared up

Won't really work, as you'll be controlling both synths with one keyboard no matter what, and as none of them are polyphonic, you'll only hear one note no matter how many VCOs the synths have together. The DSI Evolvers use a special link type connection to make them polychained, and also software t...

Re: Dream Synth(s)

Ultimately my dream synth is a model D, followed by an old school Voyager.
Of course a big moog modular would be pretty cool too!

For a poly, I always wanted a Jupiter 4, or a prophet 5. The Oberheim 4 voice was also on the wish list as a teen.

Re: New NI Synth

Well I"ll buck the trend of this thread then. I got the demo version of monark and so far I quite like it. Very nice warm sound. As for why a mono softsynth. There simply are articulations that need to be monophonic to play properly. Now if it is a question of why not have poly and mono modes, I gue...

Re: Hybrid Synths - cheaper poly analog?

The Poly 800 is kind of odd. It's what some folks call paraphonic since there is the one filter for all 4/8 voices. It's also essentially a very reedy sounding synth with pretty clumsy envelopes. That can all be adapted, but programming a Poly 800 is well, like programming! Punching in parameter nu...

Re: My (and Your) Favorite Minimoog Solos

You know another Minimoog player who I think is quite under-rated is Gary Wright. I actually love most of his solos because they are just so melodic. My favorite album of his is the rather obscure "Light of Smiles", where almost every track has a great solo (and the moog bass playing is pretty damne...

Re: How many of you still have your first synth?

My first was a roland sh1000. I sold it or probably traded it in for something. I got it around 1975 or so, and as a result I no longer remember what exactly happend to it. It was nearly 40 years ago, and ......it was the 70's. I don't remember many things from the 70's  I would definitely love...
