The best budget sampler I've ever used is the Roland SP-505. You can sample, edit, effect, sequence. The big plus is that it's not a beasty table top unit; only about the size of a text book. Great stuff, and a good mix down. Nice machines, I'm on the fence about getting one. Sounds like it has some interested pass-through effects for external instruments.

I recently picked one of these up for about $99 and was pretty excited to see what it could do, I thought it would be a breeze to switch out the Zip250 drive for a multi-card reader. Then I hit the forums, and respectively hit myself. I read dozens of forums discussing the mythic IISDMC, but no dice...
