Re: M1 - Volume Slider Only Controls Right Output

I don't know if the volume slider on the M1 was analog - I assume, yes. (Is it a stereo pot?)
Sounds like the right attenuator does not have contact to ground (to pull down the signal towards ground), check for broken/cracked traces or cables.

Re: In Need of System or Utility Disk for Roland S-550

Did you check this page?
http://llamamusic.com/s50s550/sinfo.html#S-550Info

It's one of the very best resources for these old Roland samplers.
Also, check if you can boot from the Utility Disk v1.13 and load your samples after that ("Load Set")

Re: Any Roland D110 users out there? Tips needed :)

Hi, the most difficult thing with the D-110 is understanding its data structure! The Patches in the D-110 (the d-10/d-20 don't have these!) are actually sets of settings for all the 8 (plus R) parts! That's why they're rather empty/generic. The actual sound patches are called Timbres referring to To...

Re: roland s330 sampler - the sound of it... gritty/lo-fi?

The filter is digital. Yup, it seems to be. I have checked in the service manual. They convert to 16 Bit and send the wave data to the TVF16 custom IC. I don't know what happens inside that one. It sure doesn't sound like a digital filter (early nineties!) though. AFAIK back then there weren't a lo...

Re: roland s330 sampler - the sound of it... gritty/lo-fi?

The S-330 has a nice lo-fi sound, yes. But not that gritty, there's no harsh highs. Roland did the playback engine well and it has a 16Bit converter that makes its sound smoother than other 12 Bit samplers. It also has an analog filter with resonance! You will need mouse and monitor, otherwise you'r...

Re: DIY repairs and grounding.

I just touch the nearby radiator or the grounding pins of an electric outlet (easy in Germany as the "Schutzleiter" clamps are visible) just before I touch potentially electro-sensitive devices or ICs. I've never had a fault that way. If you use a cable or wristband to ground yourself, please rememb...

Re: Oberheim Matrix 1000, notes bump, and other things

On both my M1000s which had a quirky voice it was not due to a defective voice chip but always some minor stuff around them: shortened/failed capacitor, cold joint or even dead resistor.
Looking at the I/O descriptions of the voice chip's data sheet can narrow down the search.

Re: how many versions of MOTU MIDI EXPRESS XT ?

As I have mentioned, there have been several versions of the Xpress XT. The latest one can receive system updates via USB, the older USB models can not! (you have to change the EPROM chip, contact support in your country if they still can send you one) There have been some errors with the earlier US...

Re: how many versions of MOTU MIDI EXPRESS XT ?

I know of at least four versions of the Midi Express XT. There's the old one with no USB (Apple Serial and parallel port, pretty much useless these days), the first USB model (lots of problems), the second USB model (ask for EPROM update for improved MacOS X compatibility) and the actual one which c...

1) The synth that made you want to play music: Only partly a synth: I had always dreamed about the Fairlight CMI which to my teenage thoughts was THE deam machine that did all these wonderful sound I heard from Depeche Mode, Howard Jones, Art of Noise and Yello. I only learned later how few of thes...

Re: Minimoog Model D Issue

I cleaned the connectors with "tuner spray", that's a very non-corrosive deoxit for delicate parts. It can also be used on pots/sliders without damage. With the mini though I didn't clean any potentiometers since turning them each for over a minute already yielded them fully working again. Except fo...

Re: Minimoog Model D Issue

Yeah, I always say that the mini is the Stradivari of electronic instruments. Mine with the older oscillator board has a very engaging sound that gets me every time and puts a smile on my face. When you're opening it up you could check if the PSU has been recapped (new electrolytics) and calibrated ...

Re: Minimoog Model D Issue

You could try reseating the PCB boards inside the mini. Carefully take the boards out, clean the connectors and put them back in. Maybe it's just a problem from the connectors.
If that doesn't help you'll have to look further into the schematics of the env.
