Go to Options-->Preferences-->MIDI Devices. Is your MIDI/USB interface listed and "Enabled" as an input? Do you have the MIDI device selected as the source for your VST track? (under the little drop-down bar beneath the track volume slider?)

I just bought a 626 and I don't see what's so awful about it... then again I don't have much to compare it to.

I know the DSS-1 isn't strictly "multitimbral", but I've heard you can map many different samples across the keyboard. I have a question about this though—can I have my TR-626 play a bassline (by sending MIDI data) using the sample mapped to the low end of the keyboard, and then myself play a melody...
