Re: Could anyone identify the synth sound (Madonna)?
I would guess D50, but there's certainly M1 (piano) in that track, as well as other samples, so who knows the actual source - it could have been a D50/whatever sample on an S900 disk transferred into an S1000 - it was a bit of a wild west time for samplers back then. But - it's a flute sound, I'm s...

Could anyone identify the synth sound (Madonna)?
Hi all Anyone have an ideas on the sound in this 1990 Madonna track. The sound I'm looking to recreate is the 'flute' that appears at 0.14 it continues in the background before climbng a scale at 0.23. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKVsF2yiAUA At first I thought it was some sort of flute preset fr...

Programming beats DAW vs Drum Machine?
Hi guys Just interested to know how everyone goes about programming their beats? Do you put something down directly into your drum machine and just SYNC it to your DAW, or do you enter everything into your DAW and activate the notes on your drum machine via MIDI? I'm kinda torn between both methods ...

Roland synths price point back in the day
I'm curious. When you look back at Rolands legacy in the 1980s there seems to be a bewildering range of different synth product lines Jupiters/Junos/Alpha Junos/D Series. I realise all of these came out at different times and had different technology, but from a marketing perspective what was the pr...

Re: Anyone ever used the M1 sequencer?
Hey! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I imagine most people will think I'm crazy for even trying to get my head around this but I think it will be great for basic loops etc running alongside the boutique sequencer and I just love trying to create something from such a basic sequencer! ...

Anyone ever used the M1 sequencer?
Hey! Has anyone on here ever used the M1 sequencer? My workflow is to create the patterns and then loop them to make the full song. I realise the M1 sequencer is pretty basic but I kind of like the challenge to record something using old basic equipment, plus I REALLY want to avoid using any compute...

Re: Songs Using The Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine
It doesn't actually sound that bad on those examples, although it sounds like the majority have had A LOT of processing! The Streets of Philadelphia has a lot more of a 'dryer' sound making it a lot more recognisable.
Might have to pick one of these up for what they cost!

Re: Songs Using The Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine
Well I'm surprised by how many songs it was used in. I could only name 'Streets of Philidelphia'. What sounds do Orbital use in 'Chime'? I always thought that was a 909 throughout. Not unfair to say this drum machine gets a kicking but I always found it quite useful. From what i recall you could ass...

Korg M1 Sound problem (I think!)
Well, I finally managed to replace the battery in my old Korg M1, (eventually!) managed to restore the factory settings (tip, don't use a PC use a Mac if you have one!) However, I think there may be a slight issue with some of the sounds. The Piano and Electric Piano sounds don't seem as loud or as ...

Re: Question about synth repair
All sorted, I was over complicating things. In the end I just used a USB to MIDI cable to restore the factory sounds. Word of advice for anyone else doing this, don't bother using MIDIOX or BOME SENDSX on the PC, it's an absolute nightmare. I spent a whole day trying to send the MIDI data to the M1 ...

Re: Question about synth repair
Perfect, thanks I have some CR2032s lying around. One more question, I use an MX1 as a midi interface for my set up. When it comes to transferring the sounds back to the M1 I was going to use the MX1 with something like MIDI OX and my iMac. Can anyone see a potential problem in doing this, for examp...

Question about synth repair
Hey all I need to change the battery in my Korg M1, and just wanted to check if I need to use an non magnetic screwdriver to unscrew the circuit boards to gain access? Or will a magnetic screwdriver be ok to use? Also, does anyone know what bettery is takes, is it a CR something-or-other? Thanks in ...

Re: Brand New to All of This
Hey, welcome! I'm no veteran here and I've only just got back into it myself in the last few years. A lot has moved on/changed since then so I'm kind of like a newby also. Depending on what type of music you want to create. I would say firstly decide if you want to go through the whole DAW/soft synt...

Re: What were popular synths in early 90's pop?
Well I'm not expert, but I would agree that the D50 and M1 were the big hitters of the time. The D50 feaured on Mariah Careys first album, obviously the M1 was pretty much everywhere in the early 90s. Don't overlook the drum sounds on this either, the 'fingersnap' sound I think was used on some Toni...

Synth Storage?
Hi all I've got a synth that needs to go in for repair. However this probably wont be happening until next spring. Anyway I've put the 'old girl' into medium term storage into a flight case. Thing is, I've had to store the flight case on it's end so the synth is vertical (pitch bend at the top) Is t...
