Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

Thanks for the continued help, guys. Re: wathcing beginner tutorials, I've done little else, along with review vids, and lots of reading, for the last two weeks, as I get clued up on all this stuff. It's a minefield when you're new to it. In fact I just posted a new thread asking for thoughts on the...

Re: Maschine - should I switch?

Thank you both for your advice. @Meatballfulton, well, OK, sure, but that doesn't really help me right now. Anyway I've explained my rationale for why I bought the MODX - it was an excellent compromise at the time between my need for a new piano and wanting to get into synth. At the time I loved the...

Advice on a multi-hardware device setup

I think I've resolved that the way of working that attracts me most is via multiple hardware devices rather than software or something like a workstation. I'm mostly a synth noob, though I'm a classical pianist so I know music and its theory. I've done a lot of research and watched a lot of vids, an...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

So I think maybe first concentrate looking for something that will be the main driver (sequencer) while imagining the kind of work flow you might want. Is it important to work quickly, experiment, and knock out beats and riffs on the fly? Is it important to have a measured deliberate way to get dow...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

Hi Groy - thanks for the replies. My current position is this. The MODX is my only piece of kit. I got Cubase AI with it which I'm yet to load up. My knowledge of how software and hardware work together is currently very limited. I watch videos of people running various, disparate synth boxes, effec...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

Thanks @groy. I'm principally interested in making what often gets called IDM, or intelligent dance music. Some of the more interesting techno, that sort of thing. I've spent my life listening to the stuff but never sought to make it. Very much in flux at the moment. As I mentioned, I went for the M...

Maschine - should I switch?

Hi guys I got into the world of syntehsis and music-making last year by taking the plunge and buying the amazing MODX8. I did this because it was a compromise between a decent piano (I'm primarily a classical pianist, but with a massive interest in electronic music) and a synth, and since I needed a...

Re: Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

Thanks for the info, guys.

So it sounds like grooveboxes like the Circuis and JDXI are really just for ideas, very much a secondary piece of kit next to your main setup (whether that be computer-based, or something like a Kronos), right?

Thanks again.

Re: Noob MIDI controller questions...

Thanks for your reply and for the information. I get it now. It's frustrating how the manufacturers don't go to more lengths to do total noob-oriented material and vids. I watched the Maschine video totally in the belief that it was a standalone box. It's like they make these vids with the assumptio...

Question re: "jam boxes" e.g. NI Maschine, Novation Circuit etc

Hey guys So again my terminology is a bit off; I'm new to all this but I have definitely heard the term jam box somewhere to describe these standalone boxes like those listed above. (Novation actually refer to the Circuit range as a "Groovebox".) The sort of boxes you can take to the park and sit an...

Noob MIDI controller questions...

Hey guys This will be a really simple question for someone out there, but I've realised I don't really understand MIDI controllers. I mean, I get that they are used to send signals to a computer. But the term seems so broad these days. Take something like the NI Maschine MK3, or Arturia's SparkLE. I...

Re: Nord Stage 3 - too pricey?

Interesting! I find myself wondering how I've emerged from a lifetime of piano playing without any seeming knowledge of keybed and action types. I really never gave it much thought until recently. You seem to have paid attention from the beginning, in contrast :-) Perhaps I had some intuitive unders...

Re: Nord Stage 3 - too pricey?

I spent a good chunk of yesterday doing real nerdy research into key action. The Kronos does indeed seem to have a great action (I mean, according to the specs.) It's Korg's RH3 action, which they say is the SAME one they use on their higher-end electric pianos. Which means the Kronos is definitely ...

Re: Nord Stage 3 - too pricey?

Agreed. I'm definitely not here to skimp on price. If I was, I wouldn't be considering the very expensive Stage. Not saying I'd buy it as a synth; first priority is piano, and therefore key action, but I also want to get into making electronic music. Hence something like the Stage, with its synth mo...
