Re: Are virtual analogs just soft synths with their own...

Aside from the amplifier (VCA) and if it had an analog filter, I would say it is software in a dedicated engine. I still wish they would develop a universal hardware controller based on a standard - say a Minimoog - and let every badass softsynth company develop a compatable CD-ROM or 'cartridge' to...

Yeah, the Behringer Composer probably cost more than the TB-303 back then...

Re: Octave Kitten

It could very well be a million things, but when OSC 2 was out on mine it turned out to be a loose calibration pot (the internal pot directly above the VCO 2 Modulation Depth right knob). I think the signal goes through so many of the pots, switches and sliders; if there's a bad connection on any sw...

Re: Octave Kitten

Oh, I'm not eaten up by it - but I appreciate the words of encouragement. :)

I just saw one go for over $1600 and was curious if there was a valid reason. I really don't believe I've seen a single OSC synth go for that much ever. I thought maybe it was featured on The Hills or something.

Why is this synth fetching more than The Cat? Is Jack White's new band using this or something?

The world is f**k with me because I have the lesser/greater synth.

For $150 - $200 I would say it is not over-rated.

Sharp and spacey and powertron bass for days.

Re: Guess the synths...

I would have put all of my money that that was a Solina on the first track. The Omni sounds fantastic, but these strings are way thick and smooth.

Listen to Dreamweaver or some other notable Solina record to compare...

What's the OMD 'Enola Gay' solo synth? Little Korg something...

That's some nice sounding PW.

Re: Why Aren't More Classic Synths Produced Today?

Besides development and production, I think repair is one of the biggest concerns of a company. If you have 12 pounds of capacitors and wired hardware then you also have probably dozens of vendors making that stuff you have to pay, not to mention way more specialized training for techs to repair all...

Re: playing synths and not really knowing how to play piano.....

Play nothing but the white keys and use the transpose button.

Seriously, it's easy to get the basic major and minor chords on the white, C keys. Then maybe move to root note F where everything is arranged similarly to C but you only have to d**k with one black key.

I wouldn't start with B major.

Re: Korg POLYSIX vs Korg DW8000/EX8000

I have the DW-8000 and it does sound huge. You can definitely tell it's digital on extreme octaves; like if you hold a raw, wide open filtered low saw you can't mistake that sampled, wheezy sound and the highest open notes sound weak - but for low-mid basses it kills. And the filter is sincerely as ...

Re: Recommend good preamp for recording synths?

One cannot really go wrong with a good Neve. You can get a twin channel 1272 clone w/direct inserts for $1000. There's around a dozen companies and they all sound good; Vintech, Seventh Circle, OSA, Brent Averill...

...but yeah, a good A/D converter makes a big, big difference, too.

A very low saw with the cutoff slowly opening. Instant 1978 zombie soundtrack.
