Re: Drum machine used in BEAT IT!

This drum machine: http://www.losanjealous.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/jeff-porcaro.jpg IIRC, the snare is also enhanced by MJ himself beating (no pun intended) one of Jeff's drum cases. There's a rumour that Jeff Porcaro once said in a drum clinic that he was going to do "something most rock dru...

Re: is less more with synths?

It's ridiculous how many bases you can cover with so little gear. Currently, I'm working the ESQ-1 and Moog at least once a day, and some day this summer, I'll rearrange my rig to get the JP-8080 closer to the rest so I can use that one a little too. Been far too long, and I know that one a little b...

Re: Your Synth Setup is now Extinct!

Tricky... I'd base it on two lists: First, only replacing stuff with stuff I can get a hold of today, trying to balance the value of the rig somewhat. Second, no holds barred. Essentially just what I'd upgrade my rig to. --- Roland JP-8080 -> Korg R3 Ensoniq ESQ-1 -> Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard Moog Li...

Re: What 80s songs can the EII's Marcato Strings be heard on?

The Disintegration-era strings were one thing, but for Head on the Door, Smith claims he cooked up most of that album's synth parts using a DX7, an EII and a Mirage. There are some things on Head that sound Solina-ish (particularly "Sinking"), but tracks like "Six Different Ways" definitely use one ...

Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

Don't know if its been mentioned yet.... Whilst listening to a-ha's first album 'Hunting High and Low' I noticed the DX7 bells all over the track 'Love is Reason'. I have never heard this album before (even though it did come out in 1985) and its chock-a-block with DX7 and Fairlight. Nice. You're s...

Re: Your dream synth setup

Well well well, the "dream rig" thread. Always fun stuff. Gonna make two lists here: one with availability taken into account, and one where it's not. Space is no issue in both. REALISTIC: - Nord Electro 3 - Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard - DSI Prophet '08 - Yamaha DX7 - VoodooLab Analog Chorus - EHX Tube...

The Nord Lead Anniversary Model has indeed reverse key colours.

On the organ side, you're spoiled for choice. There's most Farfisa organs, IIRC, and the Vox Continental, bass keys on most high-level Hammonds...

Oh, and there's half the ARP 2500 keyboard.

Re:

The Gong-like intro to Beat It was done on a Synclavier II. Not only is the "gong" played on a Synclavier II, it's also a virtually unaltered preset! IIRC, it's one of the first in line (if not the first) when you boot it up. And most of you might have realised this by now, but Tangerine Dream were...

Re: String sound on Pseudo Silk Kimono

On the album, it sounds like Pete is playing Taurus in addition to bass guitar to add more bottom end to the overall sound. Mark seems to play root notes with his left hand an octave or so above the Taurus. Quite the sound, actually. "Pseudo Silk Kimono" turned me on to Marillion.

Re: Lead Synth on A-Ha's Take on Me?

I've asked Magne about this myself once (as I mention every time the thread pops up here...) and the answer was indeed a mix of Prophet, DX7 and PPG Wave, "my absolute favourite synth in the 80's - impossible to program, but what a sound!" However, I'd imagine he was referring to the layers; a Proph...

Re: New Ultravox tour gear

There's some info in this interview Yamaha Download had with Billy a short while ago: http://yamahapodcasts.yamaha-europe.com/podcast_jan2009.php He mentions the CP300 and Motif XS7, as well as the GForce VSM, Oddity and impOSCar. Which means we're looking at a guy who at least knows to use decent g...

Re: Ensoniq ESQ1 voice problems like Juno and Poly ?

ps. Is it a natural feature of the ESQ1 that the low sounds [keys in the left side of the keyboard] sound "muffled" ? Apart from that, sounds quite similar to Akai AX80. But I gather it's natural since it has waves instead of DCOs. Well, some of the sounds probably will, depending on which octave t...
