Re: Is the Moog Source worth it?

I need a really good bass synth and was thinking a moog. But they are all so expensive, except the Source. Is the Source a good idea. All expensive, except the Source? Aside from the Mini or Memorymoog, I'd say the Source, at an average of $700-$1000 lately, is the priciest of all the vintage Moogs...

According to the Korg website the KP3 still only has RCA outputs. Is this correct? I find this to be one of the most annoying features of my KP1. The unit seems pretty noisy to start with, and having to run it through RCA cords, then RCA-to-1/4" adapters just so I can hook it up to a mixer is proba...

What should exist that doesn't: A bodily organ that turns all waste into liquid (the end of poo); self-cleaning teeth. Oh wait, we're talking about electronics. Along the lines of what some people have suggested for synths: how about some small, portable (desktop size) hardware sequencers and sample...

I guess one patch at a time isn't so bad, if you just save them as you go. h**l, I don't even have 100 patches on the P-600 yet that are good enough to back up. Thanks for the MIDI-OX tip; it looks like it might be just the simple, basic utility I'm looking for. I'll download and try it out tonight....

Is there a way to initiate from MIDI-OX, rather than from the Prophet itself, the synth-to-PC patch dump? I finally got my hands on the Prophet 600 manual, and based on what it has to say -- see below -- it seems I'd have to transfer the patches one at a time with a series of key presses on the Prop...

Backing up Prophet-600 patches

I'm trying to find a basic PC MIDI editor (actually maybe more of a librarian, sorry my MIDI knowledge/lingo is minimal) program to back up my Prophet-600 patches. Don't need anything fancy, just something that'll let me take patches from the 600, save them, and load them back onto the synth as nece...

This guy has the Service Manual for $20: http://www.schematicconnection.com/stor ... 211&ph=cat

But no-one seems to have the User Manual.

Given the low prices that hardware samplers are going for these days, it might be worth getting something that is capable of more than just triggering one-shot samples (i.e. a sampler that can map sounds to a keyboard and transpose them to different pitches). Even if you don't use it for more than t...

Maybe it's all synths from Germany. I just noticed that the Creamware MiniMax and the Pro-12 which were going for $600-$700 recently, have jumped back up to $800 and $900 respectively (the Prodyssey on the other hand seems to have held steady at $1000 the whole time). I'm glad I grabbed my MiniMax w...

My recently acquired MiniMax is my first synth with audio in, I've played with it a bit but need to explore it further (figure out if there's a way to activate the filter without having to sound a note). That modified CB looks like it might be just the thing and the price is reasonable. Thanks for t...

Yeah, I suppose that would be the most obvious thing to try first. I've got the ring mod, just need to go pick me up a crappy megaphone (I suppose it would be a good thing to have around anyhow). Maybe I'll stop by Radio Shack this weekend. A CB might be cool to have as well. Seems like an old one s...

Making Space Radio Sounds?

I'm trying to get that vocal sound I've heard in the new Battlestar Galactica series, when the viper pilots are talking to each other on their radios. Actually it sounds almost the same as the X-wing fighter radios in Star Wars. It's kind of distorted and metallic, like talking through crappy megaph...

If your main concern is impressing an audience, then you probably shouldn't bother with synths at all. Just get a guitar, and stuff a sock down the front of your stretch jeans. And the longevity of Twinkies is much exaggerated: http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/twinkies.asp The things con...

Ring modulators will do fun things to drums sounds too. Also a delay, with the depth knob turned way up and the time knob towards the low side, you'll get nice metallic, vocal kinds of sounds.
