I bought a KP1 used a few months ago. I've used it pretty regularly and haven't had any problems yet. That said, it certainly doesn't feel very sturdy (feels more like a cheap children's toy than a piece of legitimate musical gear) so I wouldn't count on it lasting forever, especially if you planned...

How many ins and outs do you need? I have a Casio TB-1 that I'm happy with. It's 2 in, 8 out, super simple and can run on AA batteries if you're low on outlet space. They seem to show up on Ebay fairly frequently for not a whole lot of money.

I don't have experience with all of these synths, so I'll just speak to what I know. The MicroKorg makes some decent sounds, has a vocoder (if you're into that), and is cheap. But if, in addition to just getting into synths, you're also trying to learn how to play a keyboard at the same time, those ...

I ended up opting for the Yamaha A-3000. I found one with the max amount of RAM and a hard-drive for $150, and the compatibility with .WAV files and Soundforge (something the E-mu esi's didn't seem as good at according to the research I did) was also attractive. Altitude, I may hit you up for some a...

Right now I'm looking at a E-mu Esi-2000 and a Yamaha A-3000, both in the $150 price range; I'm not completely sold on either. Any thoughts on which would be a better value? Or if I'm better off waiting and trying to find a better price and/or model on either of these?

Thanks all. That gives me a few more options to research. The E-mu looks good, still need to check out the others. I've got my synth type sounds pretty well covered with my current keyboards, so I'm not overly concerned with a sampler having awesome filters. I'd more likely be using it to sample and...

Hardware sampler recommendations?

Hello, I'm new to samplers; so forgive me if any of my terminology is incorrect. I have a Korg ES-1 which I enjoy, but I'm looking for a sampler where the sampled sound can be transposed and played across a keyboard (as opposed to the rythm-based sampling/sequencing of the ES-1). I've played around ...

I was looking for this before and couldn't find it. A more complete Straight Dope article about copyright (much of it related specifically to music), in 3 parts, this is part 3 but it has links to parts 1 and 2 at the begining: http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mcopyright3.htm

It is possible to trademark (not copyright) a sound, as opposed to a song. Check this out: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/000915.html However I don't think something as basic as a particular timbre or waveform could qualify for a trademark (synth makers can, and I'm sure do in many cases, paten...

P-600 heat

Mine gets noticeably warm, although I wouldn't say hot (not nearly as hot as my Moog Source, I could cook bacon on the back of that thing, I'm afraid it's just going to go up in flames one day.) I imagine some degree of heat is normal with any synth that has an internal power supply, especially olde...
