My (Abstract-Yet-Carefully-Thought-Out) Modular Tracks

Hello all,
I just uploaded a new track to my soundcloud page. There are other tracks there as well. All tracks are 100% modular synth with a few effects added at times.

Extra points if you can make it through the full 8 minutes of Saturn's Hexagon:

Re: The great official thread of the Prophet-5

Hey Micke - Thanks for posting the Sky video. I'm a long time fan, and just spent the last few minutes watching the other vids on youtube. Great stuff!

Re: The great official thread of the Prophet-5

Ooo.. we can't have an Official Prophet 5 thread without the flexi disc demo record from 1978. Two P5 demos are on the disc; one by John Bowen, the other is by Dan Wyman:

Re: just got a DX7. Suggestions on learning or patches?

To be honest, if The Complete DX7 Massey book is really selling for $100, I'd pass on it. There should be plenty of info on the net, other DX7 books, and the manual to get you going. It was a book that I found very useful back then, but that's a lot of dosh for a book!

BTW, apologies if I was over-explaining things above. It's difficult to gauge how familiar others might be when discussing things like this online.

Re: just got a DX7. Suggestions on learning or patches?

Correct. You'd either need a RAM cart to save your patches externally (you can't save to the ROM carts), or you can use a computer. If you have custom patches in the DX's internal memory, you might want to copy them to your computer so you won't lose anything while you make new programs.

Re: just got a DX7. Suggestions on learning or patches?

I have kind of a funny anecdote to share. When I bought my DX7 (back in the day!), I was wheelin' and dealin' for discounts with the sales guy. I bought some accessories (probably the RAM cart and other things), and he gave me discounts for everything. The original retail price was $2195.00 for the ...

Re: just got a DX7. Suggestions on learning or patches?

I wrote: If you set the carrier to modulator ratio to an even number, the results will be similar to a square wave. If you set the carrier to modulator ratio to an odd number, the results will be similar to a saw wave. Just to clarify - the change in ' carrier to modulator ratio " would be accomplis...

Re: just got a DX7. Suggestions on learning or patches?

wow! Thank you for that explanation, this really helped me to look at it in a much clear way! I was sort of starting to view the operators as osc's on a synth however the whole bit about the proportions and the effect it has in the perceived "waveform" sound is really interesting. So would you say ...

Re: just got a DX7. Suggestions on learning or patches?

Ok everyone so I have been doing some serious studying and experimenting going through the manual and not moving onto the next part until I understand everything. This is intense but really fun, I almost feel like I am learning some alien technology or something! Glad you're having fun with it! I a...

Re: just got a DX7. Suggestions on learning or patches?

Congratulations on the new toy! If you can find it, get a copy of Howard Massey's The Complete Guide To The DX7. It's goes into detail of how to program the DX, but in an easy to understand way. Of course there are many parameters in the DX7, so the books is a bit thick. :) Still, if you can program...

Gearfixer - do they work well though (electronically speaking, that is)? No crackle sounds?

Re: filter information

Here's a graph showing filter response curves for Butterworth filters - 2, 4, 6, and 8 pole. I don't know if this is the type of filter in synthesizers, but it appears to have the same roll-off rate (-6dB/Oct per pole) as most synth filters: http://www.freqdev.com/guide/images/fig5.gif In the graph,...
