Re: Here We Discuss Brian Eno's Use of Vintage Synths
One of my favorite stories about Brian Eno comes from an interview with Warren Cann of Ultravox. I like it particularly because it illustrates Eno's abstract approach to the instruments and probably indicates a similar abstract approach to music. What we discovered was that Brian was - AT THAT TIME ...

Re: Open source / freeware PC sequencer that can run VSTs?
For a sampler it's hard to beat Shortcircuit. It used to be commercial but is now free. http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php Tatapoum is a drum sampler modeled after Redrum from Reason. http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=show&id=1910 And if you need drum machine samples to go in it... http://www...

Re: Open source / freeware PC sequencer that can run VSTs?
Macaw is one. Pretty full featured. http://code.google.com/p/macaw/ Reaper 0.999 is free to use. It's kind of old but is still pretty complete. http://reaper.fm/download-old.php?ver=0x Zynewave Podium has a free version. It has a few limitations but seems like the major features are intact. I haven'...

Re: Sequencer Free-ware
In Reaper, drop the JS:MIDI/sequencer_baby plugin on a track and have 707-style fun.

Re: good VST drum machine?
Another vote for the AudioRealism Drum Machine (ADM). It has x0x-style programming, 606/808/909 generators, PCF, and the ability to load your own samples in place of the built-in generators.

Re: The develoment of Reaper
One of the good things about Reaper is that it can be as complex or simple as you want it to be. It can seem a little overwhelming at first because of all the features that are available in the menus, but if you take a little time setting the preferences and customizing the menus to just the functio...

I like VAZ Modular's solution to connections. It uses drop-down menus instead of virtual cables to specify the connections. It keeps the layout clean and uncluttered.

Re: $399 NI Komplete 5
That's an incredible price for an incredible bundle. A few of those packages would be close to worth that price by themselves. You would be hard-pressed to find hardware equivalents of Kontakt, Reaktor, and Absynth. Even FM8 is a new take on FM synthesis that makes it worth it. If you want to break ...

Re: Which synthesizer(s) do you regret getting or selling
I bought a Korg T3 because it was the hot thing at the time. Then I regretted getting it because all of the sounds in it had been heard in a thousand songs and advertisements. So I sold it. Now I wish I had it because it has all those sounds heard in a thousand songs and avertisements. :-) Plus, I l...

Here's one that reminds me of a larger version of Synplant. It's called microsia.
