Re: Which sampler for analogue synth drum sounds?

Also, I see that ASR-X is not ideal for sequencing whole songs together or quantizing...hm. And one more thing, is that Emu Emax bad midi response rumor true? ASR-X timing is not very tight. It's worse if you use all the ROM sounds though as they use multiple layers and they all slow down the proce...

It's about the one vintage sampler I wouldn't consider owning cos it's bloody huge. Very impressive mod though.

Re: MKS-50 vs EX-8000

I listened a lot of audio demo about the mks50 and I found an overall "quite the same" pads and strings. This kind of pad are easy to replicate with the EX. What I liked more are punchy sounds and a and velocity-filter controlled sound... damn I really like this sound: Velo-Reso The EX can map velo...

Re: Wich sampler will you buy without hesitate

The S950 and S1000 are tanks - you only have to look at the thickness of the solid aluminium front panel to see what you're dealing with. You have to remember, although these were no Fairlights, they were pitched well and truly at the pro market and the build quality really shows. In the 20 years I...

Re: Wich sampler will you buy without hesitate

Just confirming the Akai looping issue. Got an S950 recently and the looping is very basic, I bet many people didn't bother. My EPS16+ pisses all over it for getting decent loops. Even the parameters for loops are weird, you can't set the loop end point, it always loops to the end of the sample and ...

Re: Ikea to the rescue

I redrilled one of my Rasts, by turning one of the sides upside-down and using it as a template for the holes in the other side. This creates 7 and a bit U of space, if you drilled the holes nearer the edge you'd get 8 but I didn't want to risk splitting the wood. The ones I've not drilled, I've put...

Re: list some of the forgotten digital multi effect racks

Cheap effects I've had: Zoom 1201 - quite good reverbs, bank 3 contains ring mods, lo-fi, auto-filters, vocoders. Well worth the money (peanuts). Zoom RFX1000 - similar to the 1201 but with a 1/4 inch jack socket on the front for the vocoder. Boss SE-50 - Better than the Zooms I'd say. At some of th...

Re: korg poly-61 vs korg poly800 vs korg dw-8000

the 61 has the best filter... SSM, and it has them for each voice The Poly 6 has the SSMs, the 61 uses some NJM chips. I think I read somewhere the NJMs are equivalent to some standard chips of some sort, LM13600 (?). The 61 might be DCO but it has two oscillators, one with PWM and I think it sound...

Re: rank your synths/controllers by key feel

Just had a re-think, the nicest non/semi-weighted keyboard action I've tried is the one on my mum's Wersi organ, some good quality Fatar mechanism I think. Very bouncy and solid.

Re: Why buy hardware synths?

I'm buying synths (I can't stop!) cos they're so bloody cheap! Well, cheap if you ignore all the fancy analogue stuff. Things like the SY77, Wavestation, JD800, high-end samplers cost mega-money in the 90s and now they're almost giving them away, especially if you take into account inflation. I'm co...

Best part: $175 off craigslist... There was another guy on L.A. craigslist with two e5000s and two e6400s for sale, but i don't think they were ultras and didn't come with extras like CDs and manuals... Pretty sure all E5000s are Ultras, it was the cost-cutting model they introduced towards the end...

Re: rank your synths/controllers by key feel

Yamaha AN1X is the nicest one I've got. Next I'd say my ESQ1, different feel to the Yamaha but it's a quality keyboard. My Korg Poly 61 is a bit weird feeling. My old DX11 felt lovely. Got a CBX-K1 3 octave mini-keys controller and that feels great too. Absolutely craps on the feel of a Minikorg's k...
