Wonder if Doepfer would sell more modulars if they painted them black and put Moog knobs on?

Re: What was the worst synthesizer you've ever owned?

I have not had a 303 but did the x0xb0x thing and felt the same way. I guess I get the whole great for acid thing but that’s about all it does well and if you’re not into acid, well… Well, if you're buying a 303 or x0xb0x for anything else OTHER than Acid, you're setting yourself up for disappointm...

Re: What was the worst synthesizer you've ever owned?

Would be helpful if people said WHY they thought these synths are so bad.

Re: Doepfer Dark Energy

The page linked in the first post says it'll be 400 euros. Doepfer page says 300... Obviously 300 would be a lot nicer but 400 still isn't bad. You'd still want to invest in some other modules to round out this synth but if you viewed it as an entry into modular, it looks like a great place and pri...

Re: Doepfer Dark Energy

Looks like an updated MS404, same sort of spec - 1 osc, 2 LFOs ,1 filter, 1 ADSR, 1 VCA. Range switches on the LFOs. Yep, very similar.

Re: What was the worst synthesizer you ever owned?

Roland D110 - the only synth I sold. We just couldn't agree. And the sounds were - hmm, lets say: passable. Maybe if I knew how to program it... But I spent whole weekend with manual and couldn't understand one thing. My soviet Elektronika stylophone copy is more fun to play with. Actually out of a...

Re: Are people still using Hardare Samplers?

Indeed, some vintage samplers do no interpolation at all - they change the crystal clock speed on the fly to change the playback rate. This is a very characteristic sound that is quite difficult to emulate. But you'd need as many of those clocks as you'd want to have polyphony, right? Hence the siz...

Re: Fizmo parameters

I used to dabble with the sys-ex for the ASR-X, another product based on the MR engine, and the sys-ex for that was very close, the main thing that changed was the Model ID in the sys-ex strings. What I've discovered is that the Fizmo is completely different. For one thing, it doesn't have any of t...

Re: Sequential Prophet 2000 Demo

I've got one of these too. The Curtis filters are certainly a lot twangier/stronger than the ones on my ESQ1. Gets quite hot though! Interesting. They both use the CEM3379 filter. Yes, that's what surprised me when I got it. I think I read somewhere that Ensoniq held back on the resonance so they d...

Re: What was the worst synthesizer you ever owned?

Kawai K4 was cheesy, noisy, very noisy, and not a lot of fun for me. However it was my only 'pro' synth for a few years. Oh how I suffered. Can still hear it hissing and poping away if I close my eyes. Ha! Had one as my first synth back in 1990. The filters were certainly strange on it. At the time...

Re: Fizmo parameters

The Fizmo is derived from the MR engine, the sys-ex for that is here:

Re: Headphones - what do you use?

http://www.behringer.com/EN/images/products/HPS3000_P0189_Perspective_web.jpg Well I've had these crappy 20 quid Behringer HPS3000 for 4 or 5 years now, they don't sound accurate but I like how they sound, they have plenty of bass. They're farting a bit now too when listening to really bassy tones....

Re: PPG Wave vs Sequential VS vs Waldorf Wave?

Not like it is much cheaper, but I've found the Sunsyn to be pretty dang good at PPG sounds. And the "credit crunch" option, with a brilliant user interface and plenty of bite: the ESQ1. Not really a true substitute but I've just been tinkering with mine after not using it for ages and it's excelle...
