Re: Come Back And Stay - Paul Young.

I have the "No Parlez" LP cover in front of me. Ian Kewley is credited as playing the following instruments: OB-X, Emulator, marimbas, bells, vocoder, piano and "no Hammond!" (whatever that means). Sounds like a sarcastic inside joke as Kewley was previously known for being an organist exclusively....

Re: Buying under-priced vintage synths

I will do the following:

1. Buy the gear for $150 each.
2. Take the units home and take photos.
3. Brag about my purchase in a VSE forum post.

Re: Come Back And Stay - Paul Young.

OK, only 8 years late...! This video of the song from BBC's Top of the Pops (from way back in 1983) clearly shows the Oberheim OBXa being played at 3:34: https://youtu.be/Yete0n6TLug TOTP is not an accurate measure of gear usage as all the performances are lipsync/track sets, and the show even has ...

Re: Is it just me, or is the 707 everywhere these days?

Empire of the Sun's hit "Walking On A Dream" used drums from a TR-707, although they actually sampled them into an E-mu SP-12 for the crunch factor.

Re: Is it just me, or is the 707 everywhere these days?

Weren't the 707/727 launched as budget drum machines? No, they were pro models (they had individual outs, after all), they were released in tandem with the JX-8P in 1985 as part of Roland's "digital-leaning" aesthetic at the time (The 707/727 were their first fully-digital drum machines and the JX-...

Re: Ensoniq Mirage sample library?

Honestly, I'm having a tough time finding the motivation to do the whole collection because it's so uninspired. I'm tempted to forget about Kontakt and just dump what I have here and let anyone with an EPS enjoy it all. If you make them available in .EFE or .EFA format, I'm super cool with that. I ...

Ray Parker Jr. "Ghostbusters" Gear

Straight from the man himself: A Roland Jupiter 6 sequenced by a Roland MSQ-700, synced with a LinnDrum.

Re: Synthesis on the Ensoniq EPS-16 Plus (No sampling allowe

But isn't the internal square wave just a sample of a square wave that's stored in the system ROM? So technically, you're still loading a sample. :)

Still, very cool. I never bothered to do this when I had my EPS and ASR-10. You can sample single-cycle waveforms of classic synths for more variety.

Re: Harold Faltermeyer (80's, Beverly Hills cop, Fletch etc.

The syncl lead on FLETCH was indeed the JX-8P. Not totally sure about the main bass synth but if I recall correctly it's a DX-7, at least the powerful one that kicks in at 1:06. The pads are from the JP-8. The lead synth on AXEL F is the JP-8. Thanks. What does those little percussive noises during...

Re: roland Tr09 battery time query

If battery life is a concern, then why not just power it via USB? A cheap cell phone charger would do. Just don't plug multiple USB items into the same charger plug (If you have a multi-plug USB charger), as that introduces hum.

Re: Harold Faltermeyer (80's, Beverly Hills cop, Fletch etc.

"Axel-F" (Beverly Hills Cop theme) -Harold Faltermeyer. Wikipedia says he used a Moog 15 modular, a Linndrum, a Yamaha DX-7 and Roland's JX-3P and JX-8P , but other sources say the Roland Jupiter-8 and not the JX-synths. We need to clear this up once and for all. Everyone knows that Van Halen's "Ju...
