Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

One question - WHICH Tubular Bells sound are we talking about? The internal preset bank featured a sound called "TUB ERUPT" (#27 in North America) that was a fuller sound and had a "filter swell" (well as an FM synth could do one) sound that you heard when the keys were held down. One of the factory...

There's also a vocoder in the song too.

Re: Juno 106 owners:Do you have both banks A and B loaded?

I bought my Juno 106 off of eBay in 2006. I forgot what was loaded in, but it wasn't very interesting. I found the .wav file of the Factory Presets tape bank and loaded it in my 106, and basically have kept most of it intact, but erased the weaker-sounding patches (i.e. clarinet) and replaced with m...

Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album was mostly Roland Jupiter-8 and Yamaha CS-80.

Re: Korg ES-1 "Glitch"

I owned an ES-1 Back In The Day (still have my ER-1 and EA-1). Never remembered this "glitch." Of course, I never sampled via the analog input,it's always a transfer from the computer via SM card.

Re: Synths used in these 1977 songs please help

All you'll get are just guesses from people here. If you really want to know the answers, I would strongly recommend getting in touch with any of the older musicians in Jakarta and try to track down Tonny Koeswoyo or anyone who's worked with him. I assume you're in Indonesia yourself? The music scen...

Re: Uli Behringer's deeply concerning post

I'm not worried. A lot of companies make cheap Stratocaster knockoffs (Squier Strats don't count), and it's all perfectly within their right, but no one really buys them. The hardware synth market is very specialized in the era of USB controllers and plugins. Behringer is kind of late in the game. W...

Basically any synth/workstation that was popular in Indonesia during the mid-late '90s.

Re: Synths used on an album.

What synths were used on Terrence Trent D'Arby/Sananda Maitreya's album, The Hardline According to Terrence Trent D'Arby? It's hard to tell because for all I know it could be very well programmed DX7/D50 (even though I hear Roland D50 presets). The keyboardists are Nick Plytas and Andy Whitmore. An...

Re: Songs Using The Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cDLZqe735k A drum computer is clearly used in this "song". However the video shows a drummer, ha ha. Not to mention the horn section! lol P.S. Very curious to hear which commercial songs have the SR-16 on them because that drum computer is still for sale and very ch...

Re: Have you noticed Roland D50 being so expensive?

Later I bought a JV-1080 that felt so generic in every way, even with the Vintage Expansion Card so I sold it quickly. I have yet to try a JD-800 / 990 or JV-2080, or any of the later Roland synths. so cannot comment on those. Still the D-50 is king. The JD-800 definitely has character. The JV-2080...

Re: Songs Using The Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cDLZqe735k Hmm, never thought of "My Prerogative" being an HR-16 track, but in hindsight, I can hear it in the hi-hats and percussion (timbales). I believe Teddy Riley produced this (production credit apparently stolen by Gene Griffin, which is another story in itse...

Re: Songs Using The Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine

My theory is that by the time the HR16 was popular, commercial pop music was most likely either mostly using samplers for drum sounds, and/or we were into the "drum loop" pop era, where a lot of contemporary drum sounds had moved on from drum machines and was more into layering drum loops, for a bu...

Songs Using The Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine

You can write entire books listing the number of songs that have been recorded using the LinnDrum or a Roland TR-808, bout what about other drum machines? The Alesis HR-16, which came out nearly 30 years ago hasn't been used in as many songs but when it has, it's acoustic-sounding 16-bit sounds are ...
