One thing to consider: Tom was born in 1936 which, if my math serves me correctly, puts him at approx 72 years old. How many 72 year-olds do you know that want to go back to work, let alone starting their own company with all the risks associated with it. Tom, you're a grammpy by now. On second thou...

Memo to Tom Oberheim

Hey Tom, Time to come out of retirement buddy and start designing synths again. Dude, all your friends are making great stuff these days like the Prophet 08 and newly announced LinnDrum II. What have you been doing, eh? Pullin' it. Tuggin' it. Laying low in California, secretly wishing you actually ...

Well I think the Matrix-12 is more suited for studio work and not live. IMO it really lacks in performace features unlike, say, the OB8. I absolutely love the OB8 as a live board. So intuitive and great sounding too. The Matrix-12 has a superb sound as well, but it's much harder to dial a knob on th...

Hey Micke - since you have a direct contact with MM of Simple Minds, can you ask him the following two questions: 1. Instrument make and model of the synth stabs played during the chorus of Don't You Forget About Me. I would also like to know what he used for the single note likes during the verses....

hfinn, can you give us more examples? I'd love to hear some of the sounds you've created from scratch instead of the presets. Give us the absolute sweetest stuff you can come up with!

Thanks

1977 and up...Thanks Micke. I iritates me when people who know nothing about CS80s (other than what they read in Mark Vail's book) start spouting out advice on how to tune one when they have no idea what they're talking about. True, the early models were unstable, but Yamaha quickly realized the pro...

Warm the unit up for an hour in a room with stable temperature. Get a large towel or something similar so that you can try to keep the temperature inside from drastic swings. Once you open this up, the temperature will drop, so using a big towel to cover up the areas that you aren't working on will...

Hey Bill, check the serial number on your CS80. Most CS80s have the temperature stabilization mod that makes this concept of having to "watch the heat" pure folklore.

I am just curious, who is your favorite mix engineer? For me, it depends on the sytle of music but I'll lay out my favorites: Hard Rock - Andy Wallace ...nobody can make bass and drums hit harder than this guy Pop Rock - Chris Lord Alge and Bob Clearmountain ..everything they do sounds great and is ...

I can't help but wonder why there hasn't been a current or modern recording artist that's made a new CS80 album. Everything you guys mentioned is 30 years old.

A couple of points. First, the original was performed on a Oberheim FVS. They're not the most stable instrument for live performance, so I can understand why he moved up to the OB-8. Secondly, what I think makes Styx so unique is...nobody plays the synthesizer like this anymore. Nobody solos. It'll ...

Sonic vomit. Seriously?? Nah, I think Sytx were great. Awesome synth soloing; this is the kind of stuff you NEVER see these days. I thought Dennis Deyoungs solos were much more melodic and musical than the blistering note m*******n from shredders like Wakeman or Keith Emerson. Plus I live to tone of...

OB-8 in action

Check out this Styx video with Dennis Deyoung shredding on an Oberheim OB-8. He starts his solo with the portemento rate set too slow, realizes it, and then quickly adjusts on the fly without missing a beat or a note. Awesome!!
