Bitexion wrote:Funny thing that the Yamaha CS-80 was advertised as portable synthesizer. It weighs 200lbs (100kg). Portable if you're Chuck Norris, perhaps.
Perhaps at that time still huge modulars were the reference point - compared to them, almost every keyboard is portable...

The FM Rhodes everyone here seems to decry gets shitty if you have it on a rompler, actually.
That's the point. The magic of DX piano comes from touch sensitivity of the modulators not the carriers (as in romplers).
Totally agreed. The way this patch reacts to velocity is AWESOME.

It is the only recognizeable preset that just makes me angry.
One of the (in)famous "forbidden patches"....

It doesn't sound like a rhodes, indeed. But I actually like it, and play it a lot :-P (We're talking about "Fulltines" preset, right?)

Examples - Siel DK600 Great inexpensive synth. Somehow related to Polysix - it has the same chipset, you just get two DCOs in place of one VCO. They are quite nice DCOs, 'cause they are driven by actual VCO (SSM2031), not by crystal. Sounds great, its most important limitation is single envelope, a...

Part of the Novachord sound IS what their speakers sound like. Phil says "the 12" speakers just can't cut the high end." Well, that may be true... but the characteristic sound of the Novachord from its original time and in all of the recordings made from that time is for that high end NOT TO BE THE...

I would hope that anyone making an assertion about timbral quality would have the ability to recognize what changes would be caused by reverb, etc. When I am talking about the difference in tone, I am not saying "hey, Phil's Novachord sounds all funny and echoey!" I'm talking about the timbres gene...

If you compare his luscious sounding Novachord to the Novachords from the period in which they were generated, there are marked differences. Aren't these differences created mostly by: - adding vast amount of chorus, delay and reverb and - bypassing original amplifier and speakers, and recording th...

That's great! Did you used some operators at fixed frequency to create formants or some other way? It sounds surprisingly rich for single DX7 patch - much better than other choir patches on the net.

Could you post some details about this patch, or the patch itself?

what song is played for 'angelclouds' ?? sounds so familiar. I don't know. It was just improvisation - or to put it other way - the collection of some phrases that came to my mind when I selected this patch. The songs I'm aware of, was beginning of Nightwish's "Come cover me" for fantasia patch, an...

I'm quite sure SMFs can contain SysEx data so when you play them back in a sequencer it'll send the SysEx messages to the synth.

I could be wrong though.
You're right - these SMFs contain sys-ex data. They are DX7IIbulk dumps - each file contains 64 voices and 32 performances.

It doesn't - the II has the Unison option that makes the StaccatoHeaven patch possible (because it layers several "tuned noise" sources to get a chorus-like effect). That's right. Some patches still sound well in dual mode - each patch in this "d50" archive has its 'second part' in bank 33-64. You ...

DX7IIFD demos (warning - highly 80's !!)

http://ensoniqsq2.republika.pl/dx7.html (streaming player) Have a listen. Here are short descriptions Soundtrack - classic Roland patch. DX7 does it quite well :-) Digitaldancer - obviously without looped part, but again - I didn't realized that DX can do such sounds. It uses unison mode. Fantasia -...

You mean PSR, No - there were three DSR models - DSR 1000/2000 and DSR-500, they were FM keyboards with PCM drums. DSR-2000 had 100 presets and 40 user voices, auto - accompaniment and simple sequencer. It featured voice editing system similar to "Easy Edit" from Fm7 or DX11. There was one up for a...

In 'Metal' mode, the DCO-2 integrator is triggered from both DCO's. This results in a complex output wave such like this:
Could you post some sound examples? I'm thinking about implementing this feature into my SIEL opera? (that means just adding bunch of switches at integrators input).
