You know thats really funny, because a band I used to play keys for used to base their sound nearly entirely off of the XTk. Nice tracks - they sound great! My musical style is quite different than electronica - I need to blend my synths in seamlessly with drums, guitars, bass, etc. - analog tends ...

Hmmm...Some synths I could never relate to include: 1) Roland MKS-80 (Super Jupiter) - this synth sounded clunky and made every mix I placed it in sound like an 80's retro piece. 2) Waldorf XT and Micro Q - While capable of producing some of the most out-of-this world sounds I've heard, I could not ...

An amazing synth to add to your collection would be a Roland JD-990 adding in the World or Orchestral expansion cards (I believe it holds one at a time). The JD-990 does amazing ambient sounds, and is the best sounding digital synth I've ever heard. You might also try the Roland XP series, which can...

Good presets

I'm a fan of some presets. I find many of them exist to 'show off' what the synth can do, and are therefore more sonically interesting, as opposed to being musically useful. I do like the 'Ocean of Saws' and 'Archestra' presets on the V-Synth. The 'Mountain Hall' patch on the DSI MEK inspired me to ...

OK. With your replies, I've gotten off the ground running sampling between the XP-30 and my V-Synth (original keyboard version). I used the simple technique of outputting the XP-30 to the V-Synth, and used the 'line in' trigger to begin the sampling. So far, the sound seems very authentic, although ...

Roland authors the least useful manuals known to mankind! Thank you both for your suggestions. I'm very new to the world of sampling and am really looking forward to diving in and using the sounds in a live and studio setting.

Noobie Question: Sampling with the V-Synth

I'm a singer / songwriter / guitarist who dabbles in synths. I've written a song off of one Roland board, an XP-30 that has the World card upgrade. It has a very great complex arp sound (patch 129 - AfroHarp). It is the only sound I use on the board, and would like to use my V-Synth primarily. Is it...

Fairlight Revisisted

Read an article earlier this week in Sound on Sound magazine about the latest project by Darren Hayes, formerly of Savage Garden. He bought a used Fairlight CMI off of eBay, which he gave to his producer, Justin Shave. He was seeking to rediscover the sounds of some of his favorite recordings, inclu...
