Re: Will FM ever be sought after ???
The Prophet VS isn't FM, either is the Evolver or Blofeld. Assuming we're defining "FM" as "Frequency Modulation, where the timbre of one waveform is changed by modulating it with another waveform that is also in the audio range, resulting in a more complex waveform and a different-sounding tone.",...

Re: Should I keep the jx-3p?
You should seriously check out the KiwiTechnics mod, which for a pittance will upgrade your JX-3P to basically a Jupiter-class synth (cue all the Jupiter owners complaining).
It's not done yet, but what it has so far already dramatically improves the usability of the synth.

Re: Anyone here upgraded DSI EVOLVER KEYBD to the POT versio
This thread encouraged me to get the pot version for my PEK. It definitely looks better and the knobs FEEL better for sure. I'm still getting used to programming without the continuous pots.

Re: Tools for 80s music
"Which digital synths do you recommend to me?" Numan's early stuff was all analog synths or subtractive synths. Anything that can do "subtractive" or "virtual analog" synthesis with 2 or 3 oscillators will have you covered there. Try the new free U-He Tyrell synth or Synth1 VST. Numan's "Berserker" ...

Re: NI FM7 or FM8
Actually, they both sound exactly like a DX7 in all the ways that are important. And they have vastly superior programming interfaces. I say this as someone who owned a DX7 and DX7-II

Re: Razor---another new synth from NI
It's pretty cool. I think they marketed it for dubstep because that's "hot", but this synth is pretty unique and allows you to go far beyond that.

Re: synth voices used on save a prayer with jupiter 8
The main sequence part is a very simple sound. 2 oscillators. Square wave on each. Tune them 2 octaves apart. Filter wide open. Adjust your volume envelope to taste. Add some chorus and a bit of delay. Just about any synth can do this. The lead "flute" part is a simple patch with the filter mostly c...

The new record "Interplay" is great, too. Luscious tones and good songs.

Re: Razor---another new synth from NI
I bought it. $80 too cheap to pass up.
Sounds great.
Super-easy UI, unlike MANY other Reaktor instruments. Easy to comprehend, surprisingly powerful but simple. Love it so far.
My only gripe is they're being very slow to send me my serial number...

I'm getting my Kiwitechnics upgrade installed in the next few days (dropping it off at the tech today). I'll let you know how it turns out.

Re: Alesis Ion: my thoughts
Yes, the Ion offers a whopping 9 different velocity curves for playing styles, which are set globally (for the keyboard, not individual patches): linear high, medium, low logarithmic high, medium, low exponential high, medium, low Personally I like linear medium, but this is really 100% dependent on...

Re: Alesis Ion: my thoughts
Yes, there are multiple curves one can apply to the keyboard for playing styles. I think the default one is too sensitive for velocity, and I also think this is why most synth-heads think the keyboard feels cheap. Try changing the velocity curve. Personally I think the keys feel fine. No better or w...

Re: is there a formula for ring modulation frequencies?
Right. Because you get the sum AND difference of the partials as well as the fundamental (assuming you're working with something other than sine waves). So as you go up higher, the "minus" frequencies become more audible and more annoying. Also verify your synth will produce a ring modulation modula...

Re: Fender Rhodes noob needs some help
I just let my Mark 1 88 key Stage Piano go. Mine was one of the extremely mellow ones that didn't ever get bright. Rhodes' sound VERY different model-to-model and even keyboard to keyboard. Play it before you buy it. They're also very different beasts from synths. If you want it for live playing, yo...

Re: Can someone explain how a VCO generates a signal
I'll take yet another approach to answering this (almost ridiculously vague) question: Electromagnetism. If you move a coil of wire relative to a magnet, you create an electric current. (and conversely, if you wrap a coil of wire around a bar of iron or other conductive material and run current thro...
