Re: I think I hate my Nord Lead 2??

There were far more pre-digital reverbs than noted: Plate reverbs, which the first digital reverbs tried to emulate; and actual "echo chambers".

Re: Opinion on New Synth Purchase

Also note that the two DSI synths are MONOPHONIC, which can significantly affect their utility in a studio.

I'd throw in a +1 for the Blofeld - incredible bang for the buck.

Re: Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard : most underrated of 2009

I love the Waldorf Largo plug-in. I chose it over the Blofelds simply because of the UI. I love the looks of the Blofelds, and would love a hardware version of the Largo. But when I buy a hardware synth, I want knobs. Lots of knobs. I don't want to menu-dive. I don't want a matrix. Hence my current ...

Re: Poly Evolver FM Sound

I would agree that most of the Evolver presets do not show off what the synth can do or what makes it unique. If you want a big poly analog synth, get the Prophet. It's a big 8 voice analog synth with lots of modulation options. if you want something unique, get the Evolver. It has some limitations ...

Re: Poly Evolver FM Sound

The Poly Evolver Keyboard, like all of the Dave Smith Instruments Evolvers, uses exponential FM rather than the DX7-style linear FM. In exponential FM the modulator moves the carrier frequency up and down an equal musical interval (in linear FM it moves up and down an equal frequency). This means in...

Re: Any Colour You Like Patch

Remember you're probably not just hearing the straight output of a synth on ANY record. There's likely some EQ shaping this relatively simple sound. Plus, in the case of this track, it's going through a pretty fancy signal chain.

Re: "Potentiometers" on new DSI synths - *Rant Warning!*

OP - do not confuse the oscillators with the filters. They're completely independent. B3groover is not entirely correct. MIDI (developed by Dave Smith of DSI!) allows for more than 128 steps of resolution for controls and parameters via NRPNs and other means. The Alesis Ion, for example, uses MIDI c...

Re: Rhodes chroma - feedback

I had a Chroma Polaris for a few years in the late 90s. It was a very nice synth, except for the membrane keypad (which made programming difficult and really limits the synth's durability). Filter was not "rippin'", but the synth overall made really wonderful sounds, and you could actually run it as...

Re: What exactly is analog drift?

"Analog drift" is a catch-all phrase used frequently by synthesists as a way of describing why old synths sound better than new synths.

Many of these characteristics were considered undesirable when the old synths were created. Many of them are subtle.

Re: DSI Prophet 08 vs. Jupiter 6

They sound different. Most people here will probably tell you the Jupiter-6 sounds "better". Highly subjective, obviously. VCO vs. DCO, different filters, different internal architectures. Aside from the obvious 6 voices vs. 8 voices, the Prophet-8 is a much more complex synth, with tons more modula...

Re: synths used on david sylvian's Gone To Earth

Sylvian has said that the Prophet-VS was used extensively on this album.

I'm sure there may be some Prophet-5 on it, but it sounds like VS to me.

Definitely Prophet-5 on "Stop Making Sense". That was Bernie Worrell's weapon of choice.

Re: Your synths and their function/place within your setup

Clavia Nord Lead 2 : Playing live. It does splits and layers, is reliable, looks great, and is easy to work. I wish it had a better display and better preset access, but that's balanced by the big blank area on the right side which I (like probably every other Nord player) tape patch numbers and so...

Synth Programming Resource Tips

How did you learn to program synthesizers? What are your favorite synthesizer programming resources? I spent many years just knob turning without really understanding what was going on. It wasn't until I read a number of textbooks on sound and hearing that I felt I truly understood things. Even then...

If you're going to beat up VSTs because mapping to a hardware controller is a pain, you shouldn't be using VSTs. You should be using hardware. In my experience, no control surface is really suitable for any VST programming. It's just faster to use the mouse. VSTs have other advantages - like costing...
