get him a clicktrack running on some headphones so that he can follow it. just have tempo changes synced up and all that kinda stuff.
hopefully he has some experience with playing along to a clicktrack, otherwise it can be difficult for some to catch onto in the beginning.

Year Zero is pretty good! It's superior to With Teeth in my opinion...I love Nine Inch Nails, and I really disliked With Teeth (with the exception of a few tracks). the most I can think of at the moment (and it's quite late here) is to add some dynamic to them, re-record them, or find a different melodic line that agrees with the track, or adds something to the main groove/melody you already have going. EQing has a lot to do with it I would think too... I cant ...
